2023 NFL Week 8 Fantasy Football Rankings

Below, you’ll find 2023 Week 8 fantasy rankings for points per reception (PPR) and half-PPR leagues. There are 32 ranked quarterbacks, 53 running backs, 68 wide receivers and 24 tight ends.

On Thursday, Matthew Hill and Kev Wheeler’s rankings will be added, and positional rankings will then be ordered by averaging the rankings from the three of us.

Also included are the top-12 defense rankings from Ryan Reynolds.

For each player, you can view their ranking, matchup and implied team total according to Las Vegas sportsbooks. For example, the Dallas Cowboys and Los Angeles Rams have a Vegas game total of 45, with the Cowboys favored by six points (25.5 points implied for the Cowboys, 19.5 points implied for the Rams). Seeing the implied point totals can help you understand which games (and teams) are projected to be high-scoring and filled with fantasy points.

Meanwhile, xPPR (expected PPR points) looks strictly at usage rather than a player’s ability. Think of this as each player’s average expected fantasy points per game based on the touches they get.

The Proj. column (projected fantasy points, added Wednesday) is courtesy of our data scientist, Ben Wolbransky. His projections won’t fully align with our fantasy rankings, but it’s another good piece of the puzzle to consider.

Detailed player write-ups appear below each set of positional rankings for additional context and will be updated throughout the week as injuries and other news come out.

 Lamar Jackson, Baltimore Ravens

Lamar Jackson has averaged 25 fantasy points per game in the past six games, with at least 18 fantasy points in all but one of those contests. He’s topped 220 passing yards in each of his past three and has run at least nine times in five of six. It looks like Jackson is finding his stride in the Todd Monken-led Ravens offense.

Justin Herbert, Los Angeles Chargers

Justin Herbert came out hot, with at least 300 passing yards in two of his first three games, along with a perfect 6-0 TD-INT ratio through those three games. He averaged 8.2 air yards per pass attempt during that span, too - top-10 in the NFL.

In the past three games, it’s clear he felt the loss of Mike Williams. Herbert has passed for fewer than 260 yards each of his past three games with a 4-4 TD-INT ratio. His average throw depth has fallen by a full yard in those contests, from a top-10 mark to a bottom-10 one.

Fortunately, the Los Angeles Chargers host the Bears on Sunday Night Football. Chicago allows 258 yards and two passing touchdowns per game to opposing signal callers, via our free and flagship tool, The Edge.

 Jared Goff, Detroit Lions

Since 2022, Jared Goff has averaged 272 yards, 2.5 touchdowns, 0.4 interceptions and 22.2 fantasy points per game at home. The Detroit Lions are projected to score around 26 points while hosting the Raiders on Monday Night Football, the fourth-highest team total on the slate. Goff is the best streaming option for Week 8.

Desmond Ridder, Atlanta Falcons

The Atlanta Falcons travel to Tennessee, and Desmond Ridder will look to throw for at least 250 yards in his fourth straight game. The Titans are an extreme pass-funnel defense that traded away former Pro Bowl safety Kevin Byard to the Eagles earlier this week. The Titans have allowed eight yards per pass attempt to opposing quarterbacks (fourth-highest) while surrendering under four yards per carry to running backs. Ridder is a viable streaming option in Week 8.

Breece Hall, New York Jets

The Giants have allowed three running backs to top 21 PPR fantasy points, along with three others who had at least 14 points this season. Fresh off the Week 7 bye, expect around 20 touches for Breece Hall in this matchup.

Bijan Robinson, Atlanta Falcons

Bijan Robinson touched the ball once on Sunday due to a grueling headache he contracted Saturday night. While it was a frustrating situation for fantasy managers, Robinson did not have a track record of missing significant time in college because of headaches — it’s likely a one-time event. Unfortunately, Robinson faces a stout Titans defensive front that gets nose tackle Teair Tart back for Week 8. When Tart has missed time this season, the Titans have allowed 4.1 yards per carry to ball carriers. When he’s on the field, they’ve shut run games down, allowing just 2.9 yards per carry.

Fortunately for Robinson, he’s averaged 5.3 targets, 4.3 receptions and 32 receiving yards per game if we exclude Week 7’s “headache game.” Expect him to get the fantasy job done in Week 8, though the rushing ceiling is lowered while facing the Titans.

Jonathan Taylor, Indianapolis Colts

For the first time in three overlapping games, Jonathan Taylor was more efficient than Zack Moss on the ground and in the passing game. It’s been a 50-50 workload split the past two weeks, but expect that to begin moving in Taylor’s favor this week against the Saints.

Chicago Bears Backfield

Rookie Roschon Johnson should return this week from a concussion suffered in Week 5, and expect him to take on 8-12 carries, along with most of the receiving work. Tyson Bagent will fill in for Justin Fields again, and he targeted running backs at an absurd rate last week (34 percent). I’d anticipate another conservative game plan for the backup in Week 8, which should result in 4-7 targets for Johnson. D’Onta Foreman scored three times in Week 7, and he should handle 10-15 carries, along with most of the red zone/goal-line work. Johnson is the preferred option in PPR formats, while Foreman gets the nod in standard-scoring leagues.

James Cook, Buffalo Bills

After an alarming Week 6 where he was in a 50-50 committee with Latavius Murray, James Cook broke free in Week 7, with 13 carries to Murray’s four. Cook also was targeted six times in the passing game and was given three red zone carries to Murray’s two. The Thursday night matchup with the Buccaneers is a tough one though because the Buccaneers have yet to allow a rushing touchdown to running backs this year. Cook will need to get the job done through the air, as the Buccaneers are allowing 5.7 receptions per game to backs, the sixth-highest in the league, via our free and flagship tool, The Edge.

Houston Texans Backfield

Dameon Pierce lost a large portion of the rushing work to Devin Singletary in Week 6, ahead of their Week 7 bye. Expect Pierce to once again lead the team in carries by a healthy margin, as he did in the first five games. However, there’s a chance the 1A/1B type split continues. While the Houston Texans' run game has been largely broken in 2023, both offensive tackles are healthy again, and the Panthers are getting gashed on the ground to the tune of 5.3 yards per carry — only the Broncos have been more generous to running backs this season.

Los Angeles Rams Backfield

Signed off the street, Darrell Henderson handled 18 carries to Royce Freeman’s 12 in Week 7. Henderson monopolized the red zone/goal-line work and also was more involved in the passing game. There’s a good chance Henderson’s usage will increase since this was his first NFL action since Week 11 of the 2022 season. The Cowboys are a tough opponent, but there’s a real chance Henderson gets a Kyren Williams-level workload here.

Javonte Williams, Denver Broncos

Javonte Williams led the Denver Broncos backfield in carries and routes run, the first time any running back has led the team in both categories this season. The Chiefs have allowed fewer than 16 PPR points per game to running back rooms this year (fifth-lowest), so Williams is ranked conservatively. However, he’ll be moving up in the rest of season rankings and trade value chart (hitting the site Wednesday late afternoon).

Carolina Panthers Backfield

Expect a usage split after Chuba Hubbard performed admirably in Miles Sanders’ Week 6 absence. The Texans have been a plus matchup for backs this season, and the Carolina Panthers will be fresh off a bye. Both are fantasy RB3 types for Week 8, though one of them would profile as a top-20 fantasy option if we knew it’d be a 65-35 usage split.

Cleveland Browns Backfield

Jerome Ford will miss one or two weeks because of a minor high ankle sprain, and Kareem Hunt and Pierre Strong will take on the rushing workload in his absence. Expect Hunt to handle the red zone and goal-line work, along with the majority of the pass game role. Strong is the speedier runner who likely will have a higher yards per carry on a similar number of rush attempts.

A.J. Brown, Philadelphia Eagles

A.J. Brown gets a Commanders defense that’s allowed five receivers to top 110 yards already. Overall, the Commanders have given up the fourth-most yards per game to receivers, via our free and flagship tool, The Edge.

 Chris Olave, New Orleans Saints

Chris Olave has at least 10 targets in five of seven games, with at least 108 air yards in all but one contest. He faces a Colts secondary that’s struggled this season against outside receivers.

Zay Flowers, Baltimore Ravens

Zay Flowers has a target share of at least 21 percent in six of seven games, and his average target depth has increased as the season moves along. He’s had double-digit PPR points in all but one game, too. He’s yet to reach 20 fantasy points in a game, but the Cardinals have allowed more than 40 fantasy points on average to wide receiver rooms (sixth-highest). Week 8 is a likely ceiling game for Flowers.

Christian Kirk, Calvin Ridley, Jacksonville Jaguars

For the first time this season, Christian Kirk is ranked above Calvin Ridley. Kirk is out-pacing him in targets, receptions, yards and touchdowns through seven games. No team has allowed more fantasy points per game to slot receivers than the Steelers, so Kirk is in a smash spot.

DJ Moore, Chicago Bears

Tyson Bagent targeted running backs on 34 percent of his Week 7 throws, but DJ Moore still commanded a healthy 32 percent target share, catching eight passes for 54 yards against the Raiders. In Week 8 he gets a Chargers defense allowing the most receiving yards per game to wideouts (213).

Rashee Rice, Kansas City Chiefs

Rashee Rice increased his participation level to about half of the routes in Weeks 5 and 6, before running 29 routes to Travis Kelce’s 36 in Week 7. Rice has averaged an elite 2.5 yards per route run this season and next gets a Denver defense allowing the second-highest yards per pass attempt (8.4) in the NFL.

Courtland Sutton, Jerry Jeudy, Denver Broncos

In prior seasons, Jerry Jeudy would routinely out-target and out-produce Courtland Sutton when they shared the field. This year, Sutton has out-paced Jeudy in every major receiving category and finds himself ahead in the Week 8 fantasy rankings.

George Kittle, San Francisco 49ers

George Kittle has a 22 percent target share this season when Deebo Samuel isn’t on the field, and Samuel is expected to miss Week 8 due to a shoulder fracture. Kittle has been targeted on 29 percent of his routes and is averaging an elite 2.8 yards per route run when Samuel misses time in 2023.

Dallas Goedert, Philadelphia Eagles

The Washington Commanders are a big play factory, and Dallas Goedert’s yards-after-catch ability should be on display in this matchup. While he’s been largely disappointing this season, Goedert has reached 18 fantasy points in two of his past three games.

Dalton Kincaid, Buffalo Bills

Dalton Kincaid will be thrust into full-time tight end duties now that he’s no longer splitting reps with Dawson Knox, who just underwent wrist surgery. To read more about Kincaid, check out our Week 8 waiver wire article here.

Trey McBride, Arizona Cardinals

Zach Ertz is headed to Injured Reserve (quad), clearing the runway for Trey McBride. McBride has been targeted on the same percentage of his routes as Ertz this year, but the second-year tight end has been twice as efficient as the veteran. McBride draws a tough Baltimore defense in Week 8, but he should still get 5-7 layup targets.

Philadelphia Eagles

The Commanders’ Sam Howell is taking sacks at a historic pace and the Philadelphia Eagles have one of the league’s best pass rushes.

Detroit Lions

The Detroit Lions are coming off a blowout loss against the Ravens. They now host a Raiders team, in primetime, that lost to the Bears by 18 points. Detroit is in a potential smash spot on Monday night.

New York Jets

In general, one of the league’s best defenses faces one of its worst offenses. Even if the Giants get some of their starting offensive linemen back, the New York Jets will have a trench advantage.

Atlanta Falcons

This is primarily a bet against the Titans quarterback combination of Malik Willis and Will Levis.

Seattle Seahawks

The Seattle Seahawks’ defense has played very well in three of their past four games. Playing them against Cleveland is also a bet against either an injured Deshaun Watson or backup P.J. Walker.

Dallas Cowboys

The Rams’ Matthew Stafford has been excellent this season, so this matchup comes with some downside. However, the Dallas Cowboys pass rush will have a trench advantage in this contest against a pure pocket passer.
