The Commanders are coming off a 4-13 season in a year in which new controlling owner Josh Harris said he was evaluating everyone in the organization.

“As we look ahead, we recognize the results this season were not good enough, and a strategic shift in leadership and approach is necessary,” Harris said in a statement.

This is now the second time Rivera has been fired during the start of a new ownership. Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper fired him in 2019 after purchasing the team earlier that year.

Harris said he has asked co-owners Mitch Rales, Magic Johnson and David Blitzer, as well as former Golden State Warriors general manager Bob Myers and former Minnesota Vikings general manager Rick Spielman to work with him in the search for a head of football personnel and a head coach.

The Commanders are scheduled to have the No. 2 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft and are projected to have the most cap space in the NFL.

The belief is that Washington general manager Martin Mayhew and a majority of the team's front office and coaching staff will also be let go, although that has not officially been finalized.

Harris' $6.05 billion purchase of the Commanders from Daniel Snyder was approved by NFL owners in July 2023.
