Build

Does he have prototype size? What is body type? What is growth potential?

Tom lacks prototypical size. He started his career at center, suggesting a move back in the pros is inevitable. Thick upper body with solid legs and leaner calves/ankles. Definite room for growth in his body.

Mental

Is he instinctual? Does he play with urgency?

Tom shows above the line instincts, especially in pass protection. He picks out stunts before they appear and is quick to adapt. Tom shows limited toughness and motor. He can be sufficed with merely sealing off his man while on the backside, preventing a larger cut back lane at times. His effort is average as he works to complete his job and prevent the defender from getting to the ball carrier, but will not go over the top to finish the block.

Athleticism

Does he have the athletic traits you want?

Tom shows some adequate athleticism at the tackle position. His explosiveness is limited as he tends to shy away from punishing run blocking. His footwork and body control in pass blocking is above the line. He has good feet and uses his hands and leverage well. He shows average flexibility and bend as he has good positioning on his punch in pass protection with average bend in the knees and ankles. He moves well side to side when the defender stunts. His play strength is average. He is able to stalemate defenders due to his technique but does not show much ability to drive them off the ball or stun bull rushers.

Technical

Does he have a refined skill set? Is he a projection or is his game developed enough to contribute early?

Tom shows a well defined skill set. He is very sound in his pass protection technique but needs work in the run game. He is a limited run blocker due to lack of aggressiveness in his blocking. His pass blocking is adequate as he uses his hands well to punch on the numbers and use length to his advantage. He is able to adapt to stunts fairly quickly and displace the defender from entering the pocket because of his footwork. His anchor is limited and he will need to work on the bull rush. Tom works well up to the second level due to speed and footwork, and he does not let that alter his pad level. The aggression once he comes into contact with the LB limits his overall impact at the second level.

Summary

What role does he play? What is his initial projection?
First Team All-ACC and Second Team All-America by Phill Steele. Tom initially projects to move back inside to center, where he spent the 2019 season. He is a very durable player - started 36 out of a possible 37 games. He plays the game with good instincts and is very technically sound. He plays with solid footwork , good power angles, and uses his hands and leverage well. He needs to add more aggression to his blocking to develop into a starter at the next level.
