Build

Does he have prototype size? What is body type? What is growth potential?

Adequate height and limited weight. Above the line arm length with average hand size. Has slender but ripped arms with muscle well distributed head-to-toe. Long slender torso, with proportionally shorter legs. Average lower body definition and thickness.

Mental

Is he instinctual? Does he play with urgency?

Outstanding instincts and vision, reads the game very effectively pre- and post-snap, outstanding feel for the blocking situation in front of him, can read/adjust out of clogged gaps and make swift adjustments inside/outside. Above the lie motor/effort, finishes his runs with determination, while not overly strong, he’s got a barreling style that keeps him active and rolling forward and he drives his legs to maximize yardage gain. Average toughness, will finish runs with a shoulder (and head at times which for his safety needs to be watched) into the defender, is willing to stand his ground in Pass Pro as well against much bigger defenders.

Athleticism

Does he have the athletic traits you want?

Adequate overall athletic ability with above the line speed and COD. Outstanding body control, has tremendous balance and controlled athleticism, is finely poised on his feet at all times to take advantage of small holes in the front, which is very effective on stretch/ counter/ power runs. Adequate explosion, has the necessary burst to drive to the second level. Adequate bend/ flexibility, can operate with stability out of a very low base in Pass Pro, which gives him a chance to compete. Average play strength, not going to be a ‘trucking type’ back that runs through the core of a defender, but can break flimsy arm tackles.

Technical

Does he have a refined skill set? Is he a projection or is his game developed enough to contribute early?

Adequate ball security at exchange and through run, only 1 fumble in 2021. Above the line path discipline, patient and keeps straight course on IZ and especially OZ/ stretch/ power runs, allows his blockers to work and set up the play. Adequate inside run performance, quick feet and outstanding instincts allow him to feel holes even in heavy congestion, has a slippery run style and slender frame that gets him through holes you wouldn’t expect him to; only average play strength will limit his ability to push the pile or gain extra yards through contact, will get swallowed by big defensive lineman and pushed back if the line doesn’t give him protection. Above the line outside run performance, has outstanding vision and above the line speed to identify his course and then burst to the second level. Above the line finisher in the open field, has the third-level speed to turn solid gains into TDs, and above the line toughness and adequate motor to finish out runs through contact. Average MYM, while he’s balanced and has above the line COD he rarely turns that into dynamite MYM moves like jukes, this could be something he adds to his open field arsenal. Limited receiving ability, has poor hands and concentration in the pass game. Limited route running ability, lacks sharpness in his cuts and as yet adequate understanding of zone coverage to sit in voids when presented the opportunity. He has the requisite mental and athletic tools to be a formidable receiving weapon but is yet to put it together. Limited Pass Pro ability, shows adequate pick-up, willing and balance in this phase but poor technique and average play strength is preventing him from being a + asset.

Summary

What role does he play? What is his initial projection?
Ty Chandler is a fifth-year Graduate Transfer from North Carolina who has featured in 59 career games. Four-star RB prospect, No. 67 nationally in 2017, according to 247 Sports. Started out at Tennessee, making 25 starts over 4 years, leading the Vols in rushing in both 2018 and 2019. Transferred to North Carolina with his fifth year of eligibility and made a significant impact with 1,100 yards on a 6 YPC average. Was named Second-team All-ACC for his 2021 campaign. Ty Chandler, has the outstanding vision/ instincts and adequate athletic ability you look for in a dependable rotational running back. Would best project to a zone-blocking offensive scheme and should see most of his action on first and second down as his Pass Pro/ Receiving abilities are not yet up-to-scratch.
