Technical

Does he have a refined skill set? Is he a projection or is his game developed enough to contribute early?

Damarri Mathis will need technical refinement at the next level. Prior to the snap he shows bend in his stance. Adequate twitch/suddenness and shows this best when he gets his hands on recovers in press coverage. When the ball is snapped and he moves into his above the line backpedal, he shows adequate flexibility and quick feet to earn depth on his backpedal. He shows above the line hip fluidity when moving with receivers in coverage. Adequate burst to close when he drives on ball carriers and on the ball in coverage. Average plant and drive. Takes multiple steps for him to find his footing when planting. Limited in run support due to his inability to break off blocks and his lack of tackling form but shows enough ability to tackle to be considered an average tackler. Adequate coverage ability. When he gets beat on routes he gets handsy which in turn draws pass interference penalties but plays with a feisty attitude. Adequate ball skills and shows adequate ability to find the ball in coverage.

Summary

What role does he play? What is his initial projection?
Damarri Mathis is a 25 game starter and redshirt senior. His small and lanky frame, lacks muscle. He is leggy and possesses adequate length. At the next level he will play outside cornerback and his initial projection should be as a serviceable backup. He's a borderline winning backup if he can improve some of his technical skills, mainly his ability to limit the use of his hands in coverage and improve his ability to stay on receivers' hips in coverage. Will need to find a role on special teams and should be an adequate gunner or kickoff unit player. He needs an NFL weight room and should be able to add some muscle to help him become a better player close to the LOS. He has enough quickness to play both man and zone coverage but needs refinement in both. 5th to 6th round grade.
