Smith has adequate explosion and overall speed, allowing him to move from sideline to sideline. Average body control and change of direction ability in open space. Flashes adequate bend and lower body flexibility but needs become more consistent. Shows limited strength at the point of attack and can easily be moved by opponents to open up running lanes.

Technical

Does he have a refined skill set? Is he a projection or is his game developed enough to contribute early?

Displays adequate explosion and closing speed once he has made a read. Limited block shedding ability in the hole and on the edge despite his length due to his strength. Overestimates his own speed and takes average angles to the football as a result. Flashes above the line physicality on a very inconsistent basis and more often exhibits average physicality when taking on blocks and attacking ball carriers. Struggles with form tackling and misses opportunities as a result. Has the size to match up well with most tight ends and bigger running backs in man coverage. Smaller and more athletic backs or tight ends will be able to take advantage of him in one-on-one coverage. Gets good depth in his zone drops handles crossing routes over the middle effectively. As a blitzer he does not show much of an attack plan and fails to use his length to his advantage. He fails to use his hands when rushing the passer and almost all the pressure he generates is the result of him being unblocked due to scheme rather than his own ability.

Summary

What role does he play? What is his initial projection?
Brandon Smith played in 34 career games with 21 starts. Aligned primarily as the MIKE linebacker for Penn State in 2021 after playing primarily as an outside linebacker in the slot in 2020. Projects as a backup coverage backer in a 3-4 scheme at the next level. Has the physical tools to develop into a larger role, but with need to drastically improve his consistency and strength at the point of attack. Can contribute as a core special teamer while he develops.
