Arguably the best defensive tackle on the free agent market is off the board.

Former Philadelphia Eagles defensive tackle Javon Hargrave has agreed to a deal with the San Francisco 49ers, ESPN reported on Monday. Hargrave’s contract is a four-year, $84 million deal that includes $40 million guaranteed.

The defensive tackle hinted at the signing on Twitter.

The 49ers, who earlier in the day saw quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo agree to a three-year, $67.5 million contract with the Las Vegas Raiders, also agreed to a one-year deal with veteran quarterback Sam Darnold, per ESPN.

Hargrave will join a 49ers’ defensive front with some talented players already present, including reigning Defensive Player of the Year Nick Bosa, Arik Armstead and Javon Kinlaw. Hargrave finished 2022 with a career-best 11 sacks, helping the Eagles finish with the third most sacks in NFL history (70).

He also proved to be a menace against the run, racking up 10 tackles for loss and recovering two fumbles.

The 49ers’ defense gave up the fewest yards allowed per game and the fewest points allowed per game last season. However, they did lose the architect behind their success in defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans, who is now the coach of the Houston Texans.

“This defense is stacked,” said Los Angeles Chargers quarterback and The 33rd Team analyst Chase Daniel. “This is a payday for [Hargrave], and man did that San Francisco 49ers defense get a lot better. They’re going to be fun to watch.”

This contract is a big step up from Hargrave’s three-year, $39 million contract he signed with the Eagles during the 2020 offseason. He signed with the Eagles after spending four seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers, who selected him in the third round of the 2016 NFL Draft.

Darnold, the third overall pick in the 2018 draft by the New York Jets, went 4-2 for the Carolina Panthers during the 2022 season. He completed 58.6 percent of his passes for 1,143 yards, with seven touchdowns and three interceptions. He was signed as an insurance policy for Trey Lance, who sustained a season-ending injury in Week 2, and Brock Purdy, who sustained a torn elbow ligament in the NFC Championship Game and had surgery on March 10.
