Report: 49ers Receiving Calls About Trading QB Trey Lance
Analysis 4/19/23
Just two seasons after trading up to No. 3 overall to select Trey Lance, the San Francisco 49ers are getting trade calls about the 22-year-old quarterback, NFL Media reported on Wednesday.
No trade is imminent, and the 49ers are reportedly not the ones initiating trade conversations centered around Lance. However, NFL teams feel confident Brock Purdy will end up as the 49ers' starter this coming season, making Lance expendable.
49ers' general manager John Lynch confirmed Purdy was the favorite to start in 2023 at the NFL owners' meetings last month.
“I think Brock Purdy has earned the right with the way he played that he’s probably the leader in the clubhouse at that … if we were to line up, he’d probably take that first snap,” Lynch told reporters.
However, Purdy is still rehabbing from a torn UCL he suffered during the NFC Championship Game against the Philadelphia Eagles. Purdy was set to have surgery on Feb. 22, but inflammation in his elbow forced the team to move the procedure to March 10. Lynch said he's hoping Purdy will be ready for the start of training camp.
"It's going good, taking it one day at a time," Purdy said in an interview with Bleacher Report on Monday. "I'm in really good communication with my team, with the Niners and the doctors who I'm working with."
As for Lance, he's also coming off an injury. He suffered an ankle fracture in Week 2 and missed the rest of the season. Lance has made just four starts in the past two seasons, recording 797 yards passing, five touchdowns and three interceptions.
