Fantasy Football: Strategy, Best Practices for Scott Fish Bowl 13

The Scott Fish Bowl is an annual fantasy football tournament in the name of charity. It’s become famous in the industry for the camaraderie it creates, the money raised for a good cause and the funky scoring settings.

We’ll dive into Scott Fish Bowl 13 (#SFB13) strategy to better prepare you for your upcoming slow or live draft. After briefly reviewing the rules and scoring settings, we will look at quarterbacks, running backs, wide receivers and tight ends before discussing general, cross-positional strategy.

Basic SFB13 Rules

The full rules, scoring settings, and more can be found on ScottFishBowl.com. I’d recommend bookmarking that page after this article.

Roster Limits

All drafts are 22 rounds, and each week you’ll need to start 1-2 QBs, 2-6 RBs, 3-7 WRs, 1-5 TEs and 0-4 Ks. An easier way to think about this: These drafts are superflex (2 QBs are recommended), with 2 RB slots, 3 WR slots, 1 TE slot and three flex slots – 11 total players will start for you each week, which is more depth than most fantasy leagues.

Scoring Settings

The full scoring settings are on the website, but there are a few quirks to be aware of. This is full PPR scoring, with six-point passing touchdowns. Passers receive 0.1 points per completion, along with 0.1 points for passing first downs.

Runners receive 0.25 points per carry, along with one point for rushing first downs. Receivers get one point for receiving first downs. Tight ends get an extra point per reception and an extra point for first downs receiving.

If Travis Kelce catches a 12-yard pass for a first down, he will receive 5.2 points with these scoring settings (two points for the reception, two points for the first down and 1.2 points for the yardage).

Every position is scoring more than in a typical league. Still, by looking at 2022 data with these scoring settings, we can create a general draft strategy for a unique fantasy tournament like this one.

Hint: the scoring settings help and hurt some positions more than others.

Quarterbacks

All quarterbacks with at least 1,000 passing yards from the 2022 season are included.

PPG is Scott Fish Bowl fantasy points per game. G is games played. Rush1D is rushing first downs.

The stats in the quarterback table below are the most impactful for these scoring settings. Notice Josh Allen and Jalen Hurts rise to the top due to their rushing ability. Patrick Mahomes is slightly behind them, as he is missing out on those valuable rushing first downs and partial points per carry.

The position flattens after the top 6-7 quarterbacks, as Derek Carr scored only 4.5 fantasy points below Trevor Lawrence per game last season.

Running Backs

All running backs with at least 100 #SFB13 fantasy points from the 2022 season are included.

PPG is Scott Fish Bowl fantasy points per game. G is games played. Rush1D is rushing first downs. Rec1D is receiving first downs.

The stats in the running back table below are the most impactful for these scoring settings. The high-end runners don’t reach the same heights as quarterbacks, but an elite running back will still out-score nearly every quarterback with these scoring settings.

The elite bell cow backs separate themselves from the rest, and there isn’t much difference between someone like Tony Pollard (22.6 ppg) and Miles Sanders (20.6 ppg) due to the 0.25 points per carry and the rushing first down bonus.

Wide Receivers

All wide receivers with at least 500 receiving yards from the 2022 season are included.

PPG is Scott Fish Bowl fantasy points per game. G is games played. Rush1D is rushing first downs. Rec1D is receiving first downs.

The stats in the wide receiver table below are the most impactful for these scoring settings. Notice that receivers score fewer points than running backs, as they compile significantly fewer total first downs, which are highly incentivized in #SFB13.

The elite wide receivers have an advantage over the rest, as they are doubling the per-game production of the fantasy WR4 types.

Tight Ends

All tight ends with at least 250 receiving yards from the 2022 season are included.

PPG is Scott Fish Bowl fantasy points per game. G is games played. Rec1D is receiving first downs.

The stats in the tight end table below are the most impactful for these scoring settings. The main event here is how dominant Kelce was last season, scoring 10 more fantasy points than any other tight end. The non-Kelce elite tight ends score similarly to low-end QB2s, low-end RB1s and mid-range WR1s.

Overall Strategy

If you have an opportunity to snag Kelce in Round 1, that’s a great pick, given the raw scoring he provides and the positional advantage. The truly elite quarterbacks and a couple of all-purpose bell cow backs, like Bijan Robinson and Christian McCaffrey, should round out the first round.

Once the elite passers and runners are off the board, begin to target receivers with top-12 upside. If you miss on Kelce, the other top tight ends are solid options, but because volume is king with the scoring settings, players like Darren Waller and Dalton Schultz should be elevated.

Towards the end of your draft, focus on upside backup running backs with all-purpose skill sets since they can put up 20-25 points if the starter gets injured.

Because this is a 3,300-person tournament, draft as if you are right. If you take two quarterbacks early, consider stopping at just two for the entirety of the 22-round draft.
