Mental

Is he instinctual? Does he play with urgency?

Adequate defense alignment pre-snap, is one of the key guys in orchestrating signals. Limited instincts and feel in coverage, touch slow to adjust as he reads the play, transitions to an alternate receiver from his slot alignment or when reacting at the breakpoint in man coverage. Adequate motor/effort, hustles down plays in the flats and down the sideline and competes actively to the whistle. Average toughness through contact, doesn’t relish contact either in the taking on of blockers or in the tackle.

Does he have the athletic traits you want?

Average overall athletic ability, with average explosiveness, speed and limited COD. Average hip fluidity, transitions best at 45 and 90 degree angles but is poor when flipping hips 180 to combat Seams/Gos. Average lateral agility, bend and flexibility, can survive and stay on-balance when roaming in underneath coverage. Limited play strength, struggles to take on TEs and some WRs on the edges vs. the Run.

Technical

Does he have a refined skill set? Is he a projection or is his game developed enough to contribute early?

Average physicality in Press when he drops down tight over the slot, has the size to be more of a force in this technique. Limited capability to initially cover the slot in squat/soft coverage, is lost in this alignment, neither forces receivers off their stem or stays balanced/ fluid enough to flip his hips and cover tightly in trail coverage. Average backpedal, limited burst to close and plant to drive, bulked-up upper and lower body limits his twitch/ suddenness, will be slow to make plays in and around his zone or to cover in man from off/squat alignments. Average run support, adequate motor/effort keeps him an active participant, but with only average play strength he won’t be able to hold up between the tackles or as a 7th run defender, doesn’t make enough impact on the perimeter either often losing his outside contain. Average ball skills with average ball tracking, when in a position to make a disruptive play has average length, hand size and vertical leap to deflect or intercept the ball.

While he possesses the build you like to see, his limited off-coverage ability will restrict his usage in an NFL secondary.
