Build

Mental

Is he instinctual? Does he play with urgency?

Adequate instincts, above the line processing and quick twitch reactions in the open field but has limited pickup/ instincts in Pass Pro. Above the line motor/effort, particularly early in the season was fuelled with immense energy bouncing from contact to contact but as season wore on, stamina and energy visibly decayed, will need to be protected in-game and over the season with his snap totals. Outstanding toughness, for a smaller back clearly loves the physical side of the game, exploding into contact with defenders.

Athleticism

Does he have the athletic traits you want?

Adequate overall athletic ability, with outstanding twitch and above the line explosiveness, when rested is dynamite on his feet, able to MYM and explode into contact with defenders. Adequate speed, once in space has got the speed to take it to the house. Above the line COD, body control and adequate bend/flexibility, very comfortable and balanced on his feet as a runner/receiver. Average play strength, despite outstanding toughness and above the line motor, will struggle to consistently win physical contests given his limited raw strength and size.

Technical

Does he have a refined skill set? Is he a projection or is his game developed enough to contribute early?

Average ball security, 2 fumbles in 2021, 5 across his D1 college career. Adequate path discipline and outside run ability, shows adequate initial patience to allow his blocks to set-up, however, is by nature an instinctual player so will look to take advantage of the first presented opportunity rather than always allowing an outside run to fully develop. Average inside run performance, has the above the line burst and adequate decision making to get to the second level, but limited size and average play strength inhibit his ability to gain yards through DL/LB contact. Above the line MYM ability, most dangerous with his shimmy/shakes and juke moves once in the open field, rapid outstanding twitch makes him difficult for defender to focus on and he regularly makes them look silly with wrap attempts completely missing. Above the line finisher in the open field, uses outstanding toughness to finish every run with a hit, will not shy away from contact. Outstanding receiving ability with outstanding soft hands, plucks the ball nicely from around his frame and puts the ball away securely as he turns up field, with his above the line COD and explosiveness should be able to run an expanded route tree to involve angles/outs/ options in addition to his existing swing/screen role. Poor Pass Pro, limited pickup, balance and deficient UOH, over relies on throwing a shoulder into the defender that usually wiffs completely.

Summary

What role does he play? What is his initial projection?
Jaylen Warren is a fifth-year, JUCO transfer, who most recently played at Oklahoma State, featuring in 29 career D1 games. Played two years in Junior College at Snow College, leading the nation with 159.4 rush yards per game in 2018. Three-star JUCO RB prospect in 2019, according to 247 Sports, Warren landed with Utah State for 2019 but only managed a rotational role in his two years there, playing just 3 games in 2020 before deciding to transfer to Oklahoma State for his final year of eligibility. Exploded as a Cowboy in 2021 becoming a focal point of their offense, rushing for 1231 yards and 11 TDs, while adding an impressive 246 receiving yards. In the NFL, Jaylen Warren projects as an explosive, third-down back. His outstanding hands and open field ability will make him a tantalizing weapon for offensive coordinators to utilize, but his limited stamina and current Poor Pass Pro will likely keep him in a role of limited snaps for the foreseeable future.
