Colts Lose Punter Sanchez for Season, Sign Matt Haack

Rigoberto Sanchez

The Indianapolis Colts are down a punter, and have started to sign potential replacements.

Indianapolis Colts punter Rigoberto Sanchez will likely miss the entire 2022 season after tearing his Achilles in practice, the team announced Wednesday. The team followed that up by signing Matt Haack.

The injury to Sanchez happened while running sprints with the team at the end of Tuesday's practice. Further testing on Wednesday confirmed a torn Achilles for Sanchez, who served as the Colts' primary punter since signing with the team as an undrafted free agent in 2017.

In 2021, Sanchez had a net punt average of 40.3 yards on 52 punts. He was able to get the ball inside the 20-yard line on 17 of those kicks, which ranked ninth in the NFL. More impressively, of those 52 punts, only one resulted in a touchback.

Haack, a left-footed punter out of Arizona State, has not kicked in the NFL since 2021. He signed with the Miami Dolphins as an undrafted free agent in 2017 and won the starting punter job. He played for the Dolphins until 2020 and then signed with the Buffalo Bills in 2021. He was recently released after losing the Bills punting job to Matt Araiza.
