Mental

Is he instinctual? Does he play with urgency?

Johnson displays above the line toughness, taking defenders head on and often finishing on top of them. Shows adequate instincts to spot oncoming rushers or the nearest threat to seal in the run game, and is constantly looking for work, doing a working well on combo blocks before climbing to the second level.

Athleticism

Does he have the athletic traits you want?

Adequate speed and change of direction on show when he gets into open space and when pulling - he shows inconsistent bend, showing off low pad level when required to anchor, but rides up too high with limited knee flexion in the run game - evident with how upright he is in stance too. Nothing of note in terms of explosiveness, he doesn't gain an awful lot of ground with his first step, and has smaller more controlled steps (which isn't always a bad thing). Overreaches too much in run and pass blocking, and is too eager to make contact and get a clean strike, he is susceptible to being beaten with rip/swim moves easily.

Technical

Does he have a refined skill set? Is he a projection or is his game developed enough to contribute early?

Pass Block - When defenders target his B-gap with speed, Johnson tries to 2-hand punch all the time when 1 is enough until he has to flip his hips and can control the D-lineman better. Powerful strike is well directed to the chest of defenders, allowing him to adjust his body well to put himself between the QB and the defender. Above the line anchor, defenders rarely escape his grasp when he gets hands on them, and he wins the leverage battle by planting his cleats and getting lower than the defender. Slight tendency to stop his feet after contact in pass pro. Run block - slides his body across the face of the D-lineman really well, enabling him to reach block and seal holes for the RB easily. Smaller, choppy steps allow him to change direction quickly and adjust at the last minute to the MDM on any given play. Johnson shows above the line ability in space and at the second level, using his superior weight to overpower and pancake many defenders, creating wide open lanes for ball-carriers.

Summary

What role does he play? What is his initial projection?
Leaves Boston College as a Grad Student after starting 30/36 games for Boston College, after transferring from Davidson College where he started 19/22 games at the FCS level. Played 2020 season at LT, but in his other 2 seasons as BC, played at LG where his play-style is suited to. Johnson won many accolades at Boston College: 2x All-ACC Academic honors, All-American Second team honors (2021), First team All-ACC (2021), Third team All-ACC (2020), Second team All-ACC (2019), First team All-PFL (2018). Johnson is a Round 1 OG who is made for the NFL, coming from a pro-style offense but would suit a gap-running scheme just as well as he does in a zone-blocking scheme. Has the body and the technique to develop into a long-term starter at IOL for years to come, especially if he maintains that mean streak to finish reps as well as he does. Took reps at Center at the Senior Bowl and will be interesting to see if he takes any more reps there with the team that drafts him as a development to his skillset - can also play to a competent level as an NFL OT if required.
