Mental

Is he instinctual? Does he play with urgency?

Average instincts, has a tendency to play with blinders on with little processing of the front, will charge intended gaps regardless if they’re open. Above the line motor/effort, plays with tremendous energy and tenacity, legs will drive high through contact creating an additional weapon for breaking tackles. Above the line toughness, will finish his runs with a hit and will fight to gain additional yardage.

Athleticism

Does he have the athletic traits you want?

Adequate overall athletic ability, with adequate explosiveness and speed, both have declined since first exposures in 2019, but he still has the capability to hit interior holes with adequate burst and reach the edge of the defense on outside runs. Adequate twitch/ suddenness and COD, isn’t a lateral-moving stop-start type of back, but he can change course on the move suitably well. Adequate body control and above the line bend/flexibility, particularly in his lower body has outstanding flexibility to contort and evade tacklers in at the 2nd/3rd level. Adequate play strength, packs a punch beyond his size/weight, is missile-like on dive runs and will gain yardage based off that initial contact alone before his limitations in size/strength take over.

Technical

Does he have a refined skill set? Is he a projection or is his game developed enough to contribute early?

Adequate ball security, 2 fumbles in his college career. Average path discipline and outside run ability, isn’t the most patient of runners and will curve off outside runs paths, likes to get upfield at first opportunity and either make contact in a congested front or breakout to the second level of the defense between the hash marks. Above the line inside run performance, plays with a reckless abandon between the tackles on dive/iso/IZ, hits the hole like a missile and if there’s a crease, he’ll gain ground; on the flip side he does frequently run into the back of his own lineman if the intended hole is closed-up and is limited in his ability to adapt divert to another gap. Average MYM ability, best evasion will be done through his body contortion at high speed/ along the sideline to take his hip away from defenders, doesn’t have many options when boxed into a corner due a lack of high-end stop/start agility. Adequate finisher in the open field, will make his presence felt at the end of every run playing with above the line motor and toughness, is only limited by size/raw strength. Average receiving ability, lacks an effective route tree at present beyond swings where he has found success with catch/upfield burst. Average hands, while functional, catches are rarely clean. Adequate Pass Pro, has adequate pickup, will to block, and positioning, with average punching power.

Summary

What role does he play? What is his initial projection?
CJ Verdell is a Redshirt Junior from Oregon who has featured in 37 career games. Three-star RB prospect out of Mater Dei, CA, No. 443 nationally in 2017 according to 247 sports. Redshirted in 2017. Dominating run in 2018 and 2019, contributing 1,000+ yards and 8 TDs+ in each campaign, capping it off with Pac-12 Championship game MVP performance in 2019 and an All-Pac 12 second team nomination. After carrying the ball 407 times in 2018 and 2019, saw athletic and performance decline in the COVID-shortened 2020 season, before showing signs of a comeback in 2021. Began his final season with a stunning 168-yard, 3 TD performance in Oregon’s win over Ohio State before a leg injury ended his season. In the NFL, CJ Verdell projects as a rotational back in a Power Spread system that heavily uses inside gap run concepts. He’s capable enough as a receiver and Pass Protector to play on all three downs leading him to likely become an effective and versatile member of an NFL RB room.
