Washington Commanders to Sign QB Jacoby Brissett

The Washington Commanders are expected to sign quarterback Jacoby Brissett to a one-year deal worth up to $10 million, with $8 million guaranteed, ESPN reported on Wednesday.

The 30-year-old went 4-7 in 11 starts for the Cleveland Browns last season before ceding the starting job to Deshaun Watson.

The Commanders also have 2022 fifth-round draft pick Sam Howell for their open QB position, but Brissett surely will challenge for the role. Far more experienced than Howell, Brissett has started 48 career games in his seven NFL seasons.

“He’s not our starter. He’s coming in as QB1, and he’ll get a chance to be the starter,” Rivera said last month of Howell.

The quarterbacks will team up with the new Commanders' offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, who came over from the Kansas City Chiefs after their Super Bowl LVII victory to end the season.

The Commanders finished the 2022 NFL season a respectable 8-8-1. In the competitive NFC East division, the record was only good for fourth place. The team struggled to find stability at the quarterback position, starting the season relying on veteran QB Carson Wentz.

Wentz was disappointing for Washington, going just 2-5 in his seven starts — throwing nine interceptions in that span. The team released Wentz on Feb. 27.

The acquisition of Brissett and the Commanders' decision to retain star defensive tackle Daron Payne could mean more success for Washington in 2023. Commanders fans want to see the team improve. Washington hasn't finished a season with a winning record since the 2016 season.
