Marvin Lewis is a special advisor to the head coach at Arizona State. A former NFL head coach for the Cincinnati Bengals (2003-2018) and won AP Coach of the Year in 2009. Prior to that, he was the defensive coordinator on the Baltimore Ravens' Super Bowl-championship team in 2000.
Lewis began his coaching career with Idaho State as a graduate assistant, and eventually became the linebackers coach. In his first season with the team, Idaho State won the FCS National Championship. Lewis was also the linebackers coach for Long Beach State, New Mexico and the University of Pittsburgh.
He entered the NFL in 1992 as the Steelers’ linebackers coach. From 1996-2001, Lewis served as the defensive coordinator for the Ravens. His unit allowed the fewest rushing yards (970) and fewest points (165) in a 16-game regular season that ended in a Super Bowl XXXV victory.
Lewis began his longest coaching tenure with the Bengals in 2003. He had a career winning percentage of .518, while taking four AFC North titles. The Bengals reached the playoffs seven times under Lewis, the most successful tenure of any coach in Cincinnati. When he won Coach of the Year, he was the first from the Bengals franchise to receive the honor since Paul Brown in 1970. Seven of Lewis’ assistants became coaches in the NFL or college football.
Lewis was born in McDonald, Pa. He played football, baseball and wrestled at Fort Cherry High School. Lewis went on to play linebacker at Idaho State and was inducted into the university’s Sports Hall of Fame in 2001.
