Ed Reed is a former NFL safety who played twelve seasons in the league. Reed is a 5x All-Pro, 9x Pro Bowler and was a key piece for the Ravens’ defense that won Super Bowl XLVII. Reed was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2019 and is a member of the Baltimore Ravens’ Ring of Honor.
Reed was drafted 24th overall in the 2002 NFL Draft by the Ravens, where he spent all but one year of his illustrious career. Reed spent his final season in 2013 with the Houston Texans and the New York Jets.
Reed finished his career with 643 tackles, 139 passes defended and 64 interceptions. He holds NFL records for most career postseason interceptions (9), longest interception return (108 yards) and most seasons leading the league in interceptions (3). After his 2004 season in which he recorded nine interceptions, Reed was chosen NFL Defensive Player of the Year.
Reed attended the University of Miami, where he was a member of a National Championship team in 2001. He was a consensus All-American in 2000 and 2001 with the Hurricanes. Reed set school records for career interceptions (21), career interception return yards (389) and interceptions returned for touchdowns (5).
Reed was born in Louisiana and attended Destrehan High School. Reed was an all-state selection as both a defensive back and a kick returner. He also excelled in track and field, which he continued to pursue at the University of Miami.
Since he announced his retirement in 2015, Reed has worked as an assistant defensive backs coach with the Buffalo Bills under Rex Ryan, and was hired as the University of Miami football team’s chief of staff in 2020.
