The Las Vegas Raiders signed QB Jimmy Garoppolo to a contract this offseason, hoping he was the upgrade at quarterback they've been looking for. However, things aren't off to a great start. Garoppolo had foot surgery in March, is not participating in OTAs and his recovery timeline is unknown, The Athletic reported on Thursday.

Coach Josh McDaniels acknowledged Garoppolo “could be” out until at least training camp.

“He’s going through his process just like we knew he would,” McDaniels said Thursday. “Nothing has happened that would surprise us based on the information we had.”

The team reportedly believes Garoppolo will be ready by the start of the 2023 season. The Raiders discovered after Garoppolo’s physical that his foot wasn’t fully healed and needed surgery, The 33rd Team's Ari Meirov reported. It delayed his introductory news conference and the signing of his three-year, $72.75 million contract.

The veteran quarterback has a lengthy injury history. Last season, he suffered a broken foot in Week 13, causing him to miss the rest of the season. He broke his ankle in Week 8 of 2020, which ended his season. Garoppolo also suffered a torn ACL in Week 3 of the 2018 season, ending his year early.

Garoppolo is coming off a season where he finished 7-3 in 10 starts with the San Francisco 49ers. The Raiders, meanwhile, finished 6-11 last season and moved on from long-time starting QB Derek Carr.

Garoppolo spent the first three years of his career with the New England Patriots, working with McDaniels, who was the Patriots' offensive coordinator at the time.

In April, the Raiders signed veteran QB Brian Hoyer, another former Patriot, to be Garoppolo's backup. The team also has Chase Garbers and selected Purdue QB Aidan O'Connell with the No. 135 pick in the 2023 NFL Draft.
