Miami Dolphins NFL Draft Grades 2023: Cam Smith Best of 4 Draft Picks

Cam Smith, Miami Dolphins, CB

The 2023 NFL Draft is complete, and the Miami Dolphins made four selections.

No team had fewer selections in the draft, but the Dolphins are hoping these four players can help them win their first playoff game since 2000. Under new coach Mike McDaniel, the team made its first playoff appearance since 2016 but lost to the division-rival Buffalo Bills.

How does the Dolphins' small draft class stack up?

Dolphins 2023 NFL Draft Grades

51. Cam Smith, CB, South Carolina

Cam Smith needs to add weight to his frame, but he is a twitchy, athletic corner with speed and good instincts. Scouts love his feet and his top-level change of direction ability. With his overall football awareness, he should be able to adapt to the NFL game quickly as a rookie. The Dolphins have a crowded cornerback room, but Smith has the ability to play inside and out.

Grade: B+

84. Devon Achane, RB, Texas A&M

The Shanahan-coaching tree loves to stockpile running backs, and Devon Achane is a great fit for the Dolphins' scheme. He brings homerun-hitting ability, something the team clearly covets. While he is not a big back, he does not shy away from contact. This is a solid value and a good fit.

Grade: B

197. Elijah Higgins, TE, Stanford

Elijah Higgins is a big-bodied slot receiver who plays with good physicality and toughness. He is a good route runner with just average speed and separation ability. He was announced as a tight end with the pick and has the size and frame to make the transition. The Dolphins needed a tight after Mike Gesicki's departure.

Grade: B+

238. Ryan Hayes, OT, Michigan

Ryan Hayes is a highly intelligent player that needs to add some strength to his frame. He lacks great length but plays tough and to the whistle. Hayes did a nice job clearing lanes for Blake Corum this season, helping Michigan reach the College Football Playoff. Hayes will battle for a roster spot in Miami.
