Report: Giants to Franchise Tag Daniel Jones if No Long-Term Deal Reached
News 3/5/23
Whether or not a long-term deal is reached over the next few days, New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones does not appear to be going anywhere.
The Giants intend to use their franchise tag on Jones if the two sides can not agree to a deal by the 4 p.m. Tuesday deadline, NFL Media reported.
The Giants and Jones negotiated throughout the NFL Scouting Combine, which began a week ago and will wrap up Monday. Despite the negotiations, a deal was not reached as time continues to run out before teams must decide how to use their franchise and transition tags.
Jones is reportedly seeking $45 million per season on a new deal, which would place him in a tie with Kansas City's Patrick Mahomes for the fifth-highest per-year average at the position in the NFL. During the process, Jones switched representation to Athletes First, a move that seemingly sparked a jump in talks with the Giants.
"Things ramped up pretty quick with his new group, and we've had productive talks throughout this week," team general manager Joe Schoen said during the combine. "We'll continue to talk and see if we can get something done before Tuesday."
Placing the tag on Jones would pay him $32.4 million next season, though he and the Giants could continue to negotiate and attempt to lock in a long-term deal. Further complicating matters is another one of their key free agents, running back Saquon Barkley, is also a tag candidate and in need of a new long-term deal after his best season as a pro.
