Report: Eagles Allowing CB Darius Slay to Seek Trade

Eagles Cornerback Darius Slay

Philadelphia Eagles cornerback Darius Slay could find himself a new home for the 2023 NFL season.

The Eagles granted Slay and his agent permission to seek a trade on Friday, ESPN reported. The team has not ruled out a solution that would keep Slay in Philadelphia for the upcoming season.

Slay is due to cost the Eagles approximately $26.1 million against the cap in 2023, and the team has other spending priorities, including possibly bringing back free-agent center Jason Kelce and signing quarterback Jalen Hurts to an extension.

Slay will be an unrestricted free agent after the 2023 season. The 32-year-old just finished his 10th season in the NFL and there is no guarantee another payday is coming. The Eagles could trade Slay to a team with the flexibility to re-sign him, though his age likely serves as a roadblock in any extension conversation.

Last year, Slay was recognized as one of the league's most dominant cornerbacks. The 2017 First-team All-Pro was selected to his fifth Pro Bowl team in 2022, recording three interceptions and 14 pass breakups while starting all 17 games for the NFC Champion Eagles.

The former Mississippi State defensive back spent the first seven seasons of his career with the Detroit Lions before being traded to Philadelphia on March 1, 2020. The Lions received third- and fifth-round picks as compensation.
