New York Giants 2023 NFL Draft Grades: Deonte Banks Fills Big Need

Deonte Banks New York Giants

The 2023 NFL Draft is complete and the New York Giants made a total of seven picks.

The Giants, who were one of the NFL's surprise teams in 2022 and reached the NFC Division Round, added three consecutive players for their offense after picking a cornerback in the first round.

The 33rd Team Scouting Dept. graded every pick in this year’s draft, and here’s how the Lions fared:

New York Giants 2023 NFL Draft Grades

24. Deonte Banks, CB, Maryland

*From Jacksonville

Deonte Banks (scouting report) is a physical corner with ideal size and high-level athletic tools. He's a twitchy player with speed but does not have great ball production. The Giants needed help on the back end of their defense and landed a good fit for Wink Martindale's defense.

Grade: B+

57. John Michael Schmitz, C, Minnesota

The Giants needed a center and they got their man in the second round. John Michael Schmitz (scouting report) is a tough player who will not back down from a fight and has the instincts to lead an NFL offensive line. He does not have any rare athletic traits but was productive at the end of the day.

Grade: B

73. Jalin Hyatt, WR, Tennessee

*From Rams

Jalin Hyatt (scouting report) is perhaps the most explosive wide receiver in the draft. He hits top speed quickly and will give the Giants a downfield threat to stretch the defense. He is not just an athlete, he is polished, he understands how to run routes and he sets up defenders.

Grade: A+

172. Eric Gray, RB, Oklahoma

*Compensatory pick

Eric Gray (scouting report) provides depth behind Saquon Barkley. He is a solid three-down running back prospect with adequate tools and instincts. He is a tough, decisive runner who lacks juice when he hits the second level.

Grade: B-

209. Tre Hawkins III, CB, Old Dominion

*From Kansas City

Tre Hawkins III (scouting report) has good height and length and ran 4.42 on his pro day. He's a two-year starter who had two interceptions in 2022 and 99 tackles in the past two years.

Grade: C-

243. Jordon Riley, DL, Oregon

Jordon Riley (scouting report) is a massive man at 338 pounds. He boasts good length but is just an ordinary athlete. He has the size and strength to clog up the middle but is a run-stuffer only who will battle for a practice squad spot.

Grade: D

254. Gervarrius Owens, S, Houston

*Compensatory pick

Gervarrius Owens (scouting report) has good length and some explosiveness. He had 208 career tackles and four interceptions, returning one for a touchdown.

Grade: C
