Report: Derek Carr Will Visit With New York Jets
News 2/17/23
Free agent quarterback Derek Carr will meet with the New York Jets in the coming days, NFL Media reported. Carr was released by the Las Vegas Raiders on Tuesday, making him a free agent available to meet with any team. This gives him a month head start over other free agents, since the negotiating period for them doesn't open until March 13.
The Jets are the second team that Carr has visited after the New Orleans Saints.
Following Carr's release, Greg Jennings, an analyst for The 33rd Team, discussed the possibility that the former Raiders' QB could end up as a New York Jet.
“I think the New York Jets is a perfect spot,” Jennings said on Tuesday. “When you think about what they have already on their roster, it’s ready-made with the insertion of a [quality] quarterback. The Jets wouldn’t have to give anything up; they can just acquire Derek Carr for whatever that contract will look like and whatever he’s trying to get.”
The Jets entered the 2022 season confident their franchise quarterback was on the roster. The former No. 2 overall pick Zach Wilson was lauded as the team's future. But Wilson failed to meet those expectations, eventually winding up as a healthy scratch in some of the team's final games.
Since the end of the season, the Jets have been linked to veteran quarterbacks. Owner Woody Johnson referred to the quarterback position as "the missing piece" when he spoke to reporters in January.
Carr isn't the only name that's been linked to the Jets, as quarterback Aaron Rodgers appears to be on their shortlist as well.
