Build

Does he have prototype size? What is body type? What is growth potential?

Tyler Badie has a strong build with a short stature. Limited weight to add to his upper and lower body. Could probably add 5 more lbs if necessary. In the back half of the season, Badie missed some games due to a leg injury (including Armed Forces Bowl)

Mental

Is he instinctual? Does he play with urgency?

Shows moderate toughness in his running approach and can shy or slip in his technique at contact point in pass pro and between the tackles. Shows patience behind the LOS with the ability to regap at the second level and find space for extra yards.

Athleticism

Does he have the athletic traits you want?

Plant and drive allows for explosion up the field but can be tracked down from behind as his speed does not match his burst. Best when running in outside zone where he can search at the second level while allowing blocks to develop, one cut and burst. When he sinks, he shows an explosive jump cut and light feet but can be stagnant in his footwork behind the LOS as he waits for blocks. In open space, his COD can make defenders miss and has more wiggle/MYM at the second level/in space than between the tackles. Average physically and leg drive

Technical

Does he have a refined skill set? Is he a projection or is his game developed enough to contribute early?

Tyler Badie is an outstanding receiver and best with the ball in his hands with room to manipulate one on one. Can run a basic route tree dynamically, but could upgrade from increased route tree, as he has shown the ability to do so. Is able to create on his own in the receiving game at a far higher rate than as a rusher as his approach with his footwork changes. Limited power behind his pads has him denied by defenders in falling forward or grinding for extra yardage. Will not be effective in between the tackles. In pass protection, he is a semi-willing participant, but his technique slips as his eyes wander and rarely squares up a defender 1 v 1.

Summary

What role does he play? What is his initial projection?
Tyler Badie was the 3rd down/complementary option on the Missouri offense for years, before fully ceasing the starting role this season. Badie had 7 games of over 20 carries, including 3 with 30+. Badie is a smaller back who could see a role as a 3rd down back in the NFL but is limited in his ability on 1st-2nd down due to consistent traits. Would perform best in a situation where he is asked to run in outside zone, be a one cut back with burst and take the yardage given to him by his OL. Rarely will his long speed cut off pursuit angles as his speed is missing a gear. Badie's value is shown when he is able to get the ball in his hands in space as a pass catcher. He can run dynamic routes in a basic route tree, is a willing blocker, and can MYM in space. He could make a roster early in his career with return ability on special teams and as a 3rd down pass catcher. He will struggle to participate on other downs and in the coverage unit due to size and a lack of ability to run between the tackles. His route running tree was simplistic at Missouri, and he can do more with being split out wide.
