Mental

Is he instinctual? Does he play with urgency?

Limited snap timing and anticipation, rarely off the ball first. Limited instincts post-snap, can look lost in space or through contact and lacks a playmaking feel. Limited toughness, doesn’t appear to embrace contact. Average motor/effort, even if unsuccessful at least plays through the whistle.

Athleticism

Does he have the athletic traits you want?

Average overall AA, with adequate COD, average speed, explosiveness and twitch. Lacks the initial high-end burst and natural bend you’d like to see from an Edge defender. Limited overall bend and cornering ability, doesn’t have the bend in the ankles to adequately get around the corner. Poor play strength, is frequently dominated at the POA vs. Run and lacks the strength to use power moves vs. Pass.

Technical

Does he have a refined skill set? Is he a projection or is his game developed enough to contribute early?

Limited get-off and upfield burst vs. Pass. Limited pass rush moves, will utilize the edge rush the majority of the time but he lacks the necessary burst for that to successfully translate to the next level. Lacks viable rush alternatives at this time. Limited UOH in the pass rush, with limited hand speed and timing. Limited rush angles and closing speed, is fairly sluggish to engage in the backfield. Limited overall run defender. Poor at POA and anchor vs. Gap and Zone, limited heavy hands and limited ability to disengage in the run game. Limited play temperament, is a touch too hesitant in space and he lacks the high-end AA to make up for it. Limited wrap tackling technique, misses tackles in open space and lacks requisite physicality to engage between the tackles.

Summary

What role does he play? What is his initial projection?
DeAndre Johnson is a Graduate Senior Transfer at Miami who has featured in 51 career games. Three-star edge prospect coming out of high school, rated No.787 in the nation by 247Sports. Spent four years at Tennessee before Miami, starting 9 games and recording 10 sacks in his four-year career at Tennessee. Transferred to Miami with his extra year of eligibility and posted career highs in sacks (5), tackles (13) and tackles for loss (5) in 2021. DeAndre Johnson will likely to struggle to land on an NFL roster given his age and lack of high-end skillset. He projects best as a reserve weakside edge prospect, where he’d be utilized in pure edge rush and in shallow zone coverage.
