Monday's Most Notable NFL Roster Cuts
Every NFL franchise is currently trimming their rosters down to the 53 players they will carry with them into Week 1 of the regular season.
Here’s a look at some of the most notable cuts thus far.
Chris Streveler
The New York Jets have informed quarterback Chris Streveler that they will be waiving him, according to ESPN. The former Grey Cup winner had an outstanding preseason and led the team in rushing. After playing with the Winnepeg Blue Bombers, Streveler has been in the NFL with four different teams since 2020.

Tim Boyle
The Detroit Lions have cut quarterback Tim Boyle, according to NFL Media. The longtime Green Bay Packers backup had signed with the Lions last season, but failed to outright win the backup job from David Blough who also disappointed during the preseason—although had some moments during HBO's Hard Knocks. Boyle's cut will save the Lions $1.75 million against the cap.
Brett Kern
After spending the last 13 seasons of his career with the Tennessee Titans, punter Brett Kern was released on Monday afternoon, according to ESPN. Kern, a three-time Pro Bowl selection, went undrafted out of the University of Toledo before being signed by the Denver Broncos. However, he spent less than two full seasons in Denver before being claimed off waivers by the Titans. Kern earned second-team All-Pro honors in 2017 and was a first-team All-Pro in 2019.
Carson Strong
The Philadelphia Eagles are cutting quarterback Carson Strong, according to CBS Sports. Strong went undrafted out of the University of Nevada in 2022 despite a solid senior season in which he completed over 70% of his passes for 4,186 yards passing and 36 TDs. Strong’s contract at signing included significant guaranteed money, but the Eagles appear to feel comfortable going forward without the rookie signal caller.
Laquon Treadwell
After a stand-out career at the University of Mississippi, the Minnesota Vikings drafted receiver Laquon Treadwell in the first round of the 2016 NFL Draft. Treadwell finished his collegiate career with a superb junior season in which he caught 82 passes for 1,153 yards receiving and 11 touchdowns.
Unfortunately, Treadwell has struggled to have the same success at the pro level. During six seasons with three different teams, Treadwell has totaled only 1,184 yards receiving for his career and has never started more than seven games in a season. The Jacksonville Jaguars moved on from the talented receiver Monday afternoon, according to WJXT Jacksonville.
Sam Martin
Drafted in the fifth round by the Lions back in 2013, Martin spent the first seven seasons of his career with Detroit. The former Appalachian State punter signed as a free agent with Denver in March of 2020 and has started all 23 games for the team during the last two seasons. However, the Broncos and new coach Nathaniel Hackett chose to move on from Martin on Monday afternoon, according to NFL Media.
Jaquiski Tartt
Following seven solid seasons with the San Francisco 49ers, Jaquiski Tartt signed a one-year deal with Philadelphia in June of 2022. However, should Tartt take the field this year, it will likely be with a different team after the club chose to release Tartt Monday afternoon, according to Fox Sports. Tartt was a second-round pick out of Samford University in the 2015 NFL Draft and started 64 games for the 49ers.
Sony Michel
After being traded to the Los Angeles Rams just before week one last season, Michel signed with the Dolphins in hopes of winning the starting running back role that was up for grabs. Unfortunately, he was unable to outlast Chase Edmonds, Raheem Mostert, and Myles Gaskin, according to NFL Media. A first-round pick in the 2018 NFL draft, Michel will hope to find a new home.
Mohamed Sanu Sr.
Known best for his excellent arm, Sanu Sr. is looking for a new home. He made his name with the Atlanta Falcons, where he starred opposite of Julio Jones and played in Super Bowl LI against the New England Patriots. He was then traded to the Patriots before the 2020 deadline for a second-round pick. He played last season with the San Francisco 49ers and followed Mike McDaniel but the Dolphins ended up releasing him on Monday, according to Pro Football Network's Aaron Wilson.
Jarrad Davis
For the second time in two years, linebacker Jarrad Davis has not fit into the plans of the Detroit Lions, according to NFL Media. Davis, a first round pick in 2017 out of Florida, signed with the Lions in March of 2022 after spending a year with the New York Jets. The emergence of young linebackers Derrick Barnes and Malcolm Rodriguez apparently made Davis expendable.
