After nine up-and-down seasons in the Silver and Black, quarterback Derek Carr is moving on. Carr was released by the Las Vegas Raiders on Tuesday, hours before his contract was to be fully guaranteed, ESPN reported.

"We wish the Raiders the best of luck," Carr's agent Tweeted. "This is the tough part of this business. That’s the point; it’s just business. Time now to reset for both sides. Derek chooses to hold on to many good memories and friendships without any ill will. That’s who he is. Onward and upward."

It was reported on Sunday that Carr would veto any trade, forcing the Raiders to release him before having to pay him $40.4 million over the next two years. Carr will now openly negotiate a deal with another team, giving him a month's head start on free agency.

Former NFL quarterback Rich Gannon, an analyst for The 33rd Team, believes a number of teams could use Carr's services.

"There are as many as 10 teams that could be in the quarterback market," Gannon said. "Will Derek Carr be an upgrade over what they currently have? Without question, yes. But how much of an upgrade is my point ... I don't know that Carr is going to go somewhere in 2023 and put that team on his shoulders and take them to a division title."

Carr's no-trade clause gave him immense power. The New Orleans Saints had agreed to the framework of a trade last week with the Raiders and were seeking a third-round pick for Carr.

On Wednesday, Carr met with Saints brass, including coach Dennis Allen, general manager Mickey Loomis and offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael. The Saints could still sign Carr, but they're more than $57 million over the cap, according to Spotrac.

Carr will have other suitors, and one likely contender will be the New York Jets. Analyst Greg Jennings of The 33rd Team likes the fit.

"I think the New York Jets is a perfect spot," Jennings said on Tuesday. "When you think about what they have already on their roster, it's ready-made with the insertion of a [quality] quarterback. The Jets wouldn't have to give anything up; they can just acquire Derek Carr for whatever that contract will look like and whatever he's trying to get."
