Saints' Trevor Penning Will Require Foot Surgery, Out Indefinitely

New Orleans Saints rookie offensive lineman Trevor Penning will require surgery on his left foot after an injury suffered in Friday's preseason finale. A Saturday MRI revealed a torn ligament in Penning's foot, according to NFL media, which will leave him out indefinitely.

Penning went to the injury tent on Friday night following a goal line play during that preseason finale. After an initial examination, he was carted to the training room and was seen without a shoe on his foot.

The initial news from the morning indicated a "significant" turf toe injury for Penning.

"Turf toe is an injury to the structures underneath the big toe called the plantar plate," said The 33rd Team's Dr. Jess Flynn. "It sounds like no big deal—it’s just a toe—but the big toe is actually quite important. Any time you push off to run, you use the power of your big toe. Turf toe can range from mild sprain to full tear and depending on severity may be treated with rest and special cleat insoles or may require surgery."

The Saints drafted Penning in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft. He was expected to compete for the Saints' starting left tackle position with James Hurst, who is also missing time with an injury. Penning started the third preseason game in Hurst's absence, with Derrick Kelly filling in after Penning left the game.
