Mental

Is he instinctual? Does he play with urgency?

He displayed average instincts. Showed average snap timing/anticipation. Displayed average run v pass diagnosis, and had trouble keying the ball. Got fooled on mesh points on read options (Oklahoma St.). He is late to key the ball on jets, and misdirection plays. Played in a scheme where he was asked to knife inside a ton, and this caused him to lose gap integrity and teams were able to get outside of him. This also caused him to get out of his pass rush lanes. He plays with an adequate motor, but would like to see him more consistently engaged versus the run.

Athleticism

Does he have the athletic traits you want?

Nik Bonitto is an outstanding athlete who has a combination of outstanding speed, body control, bend, COD, lateral agility, and above the line explosiveness. He has outstanding twitch/suddenness, that allows him to beat OTs inside. His AA allows him to have above the line speed rush ability. He can bend and flatten the edge at a high level due to his outstanding AA. He is a fluid athlete in space who projects as someone who can play underneath zone coverage...Has limited play strength. When an OL gets their hands on his chest, he is finished. He does not have the play strength to anchor and win at POA.

Technical

Does he have a refined skill set? Is he a projection or is his game developed enough to contribute early?

Nik Bonitto has an explosive first step and is able to win as a speed rusher due to his outstanding AA. He has an adequate pass rush plan and has adequate UOH. He can bend and flatten the edge due to his outstanding AA. He has outstanding closing speed that allows him to make plays in pursuit and close on the QB quickly. He does an adequate job of maintaining arm extension vs drive blocks, and he plays with adequate leverage...He is going to need to develop more strength if he is going to be a three down player in the NFL. He is limited as a power rusher due to his play strength and average heavy hands. Does not show much pop in his hands in his initial punch. He is limited at POA due to his play strength. He struggles to disengage when OL get their hands on his chest. He is unable to win with his body lean. He also needs to do be more physical when setting the edge. He is going to need to develop in coverage due to inexperience.

Summary

What role does he play? What is his initial projection?
Nik Bonitto is a RS JR at Oklahoma who has started 29 of 39 career games. He is a former four star prospect, and was an All-American in HS. He was a Second Team All-American and an Academic All-Big 12 Second Team honoree in 2020. In 2021, he was an All-Big 12 Second Team selection and a Bednarik Award semifinalist. He ranks 13th in sacks in Oklahoma history (18.5). Nik Bonitto got better each season, and he has the AA to see time early in his career. In order to become a three down player, he is going to need to add strength, and be stronger at POA. Nik Bonitto fits best as a 3-4 OLB. He also has special teams value. He projects as a situational pass rusher in year one with starter upside if he can improve his play strength.
