Does he have prototype size? What is body type? What is growth potential?

Devonte Wyatt has a significantly lighter, more compact frame relative his highly viewed Georgia counterpart (Jordan Davis) and has average height and average weight that will have him looking overmatched from time to time on the interior. However, what he may lack in size and looks off the bus, he gains in movement ability and general athleticism (more on that later). Possesses average overall length with limited arm length, limited shoulder width (lowest among IDL in 2022), and average hand size. Light in lower half with thin thighs and limited hip/rear build. Other than missing the Vandy game in 2018 due to an undisclosed injury, Devonte Wyatt hasn’t had any notable injuries in his career and has been the most consistently reliable IDL for Georgia over the past 3 years (lead all IDL on Georgia in tackles every season from 2019-2021). Of the known ages for the IDL prospects, Devonte Wyatt is the oldest (born on 3/31/1998) and will be almost 24.5 by the time he plays in his first NFL game (low developmental upside likely or “he is what he is”).

Is he instinctual? Does he play with urgency?

Devonte Wyatt has above the line toughness and showed the grit and willingness to play every single position along the defensive front and play each serviceably at a minimum, but often at an above the line level. Also adds Special Teams value with experience as a shield on Punt Coverage. Outstanding, highly instinctive, and smart FBIQ player that lives off his ability to keep his head up, eyeball and diagnose the backfield/pre-snap motions, and anticipate the snap effectively to be able to win early before the OL has an ability to react at the snap (must beat you as a penetrator/block avoider instead of playing with power consistently to be successful). Also, can be seen consistently communicating to the other DL, helping with their alignments. Does overcompensate and run himself out of plays at times. Outstanding motor that runs hot nearly every play and leads late into the game when the OL has expended most of their energy. Very willing to chase in space far down the field and showcases his impressive 40 at the combine frequently on the field (good FB speed).

Does he have the athletic traits you want?

Devonte Wyatt has above the line explosiveness for his size due to his above the line get off, outstanding foot speed, and outstanding lateral quickness (and ability to quickly gain width) that aids in his ability to jump the snap effectively and work around blockers while overcoming his average initial strike and limited ability to anchor. Quick like a cat and has above the line speed that translates from how his 4.78 40 at the Combine to his closing speed and speed off the LOS on gameday. Above the line body control and struggles with limited ability to anchor but rarely loses his feet beneath him even when taken off the ground for any sort of time which flashing ability to work leverage and strike in the interior. Above the line flexibility and bend and often shows the ability to maneuver his shoulders underneath blockers with his upper body while flashes outside pass rush ability to bend the corner (looks outstanding in bag drills). Outstanding COD and redirect ability to recover and react whether that be in space, working down the LOS playing cross-face, or in Pass Rush. Adequate play strength due to his willingness and flashes with strike across the DL including often as a twisting mismatch at 0-Tech on 3rd Down.

Does he have a refined skill set? Is he a projection or is his game developed enough to contribute early?

Devonte Wyatt has above the line get off for his size and is a very anticipatory player at the snap regardless of R/P. Above the line ability as a Pass Rusher from a 5-Tech but is inconsistent from the interior (0-3 Tech) if he must play on blockers and anchor or must manage/work through Double Teams, therefore he has adequate overall Pass Rush ability. Average heavy handedness and it is necessary for him to win early there (along with his initial striking power) and be an initiator instead of a reactionary player. Disruptive, adequate POA player than get swallowed up with length and anchor but flashes ability to play with violence and instincts while also having the flexibility to work around OL and get skinny through Double Teams. Adequate disengage and plays better with more space between him and the OL so that he can win with hand quickness/general UOH and his foot athleticism. Can feel comfortable playing him toward the field with his above the line closing speed. Flashes his closing speed while running and chasing downfield in pursuit (a la Bryce Young in the SEC Championship). Above the line twitch and suddenness and has the quick twitch and flexibility bend and dip early or to create in the 2nd half of the snap in Pass Rush against a tired OL. Outstanding play temperament and rarely takes plays off.

What role does he play? What is his initial projection?
5th-year, COVID SR who has started 25 of 49 games, including 14 of 14 in 2021. 4-star HS prospect who originally signed with Georgia out of HS before, instead, going to Hutchinson CC (KS) for a year before coming back to Georgia and signing out of JUCO a year afterwards. DNS for Georgia (after coming in 2018) until the Sugar Bowl in 2019. Even without being a regular starter on the DL in 2019, he still led the interior DL in tackles (30). Did not relinquish his starting role after that game, as he started every other game that he played in college (24/24 games). Highly decorated player in 2021, with a Coach’s All-SEC 1st Team, AP All-SEC 2nd Team, and National Championship to boot. Senior Bowl attendee. Played under HC Kirby Smart (6th season), DC Dan Lanning (3rd season), and DL Coach Tray Scott (5th season). Devonte Wyatt is a winning player with a low-ceiling and high floor player with a maxed-out frame [partly due to age (will be approx. 24.5 around his first NFL game)] who will project as a versatile Starter that you can win with due to his versatility, motor, leverage, and initial quickness and get off. He projects best as a 3-Tech in a 4-3 (with ability to play well as an undersized 3-4 DE as well) due to his inconsistency playing with power and anchoring at the POA but has shown versatility to play every position (0-5-Tech) along the DL and be successful in spurts.
