Build

Does he have prototype size? What is body type? What is growth potential?

Damone Clark has above the line size and length for the linebacker position. He has a muscular and high cut frame with good muscle definition in his arms and lower body. Did not miss any time with injury during his career but was diagnosed with a herniated disk at the Scouting Combine. Underwent spinal fusion surgery to repair and is expected to make a full recovery, but will miss the entirety of his rookie season in 2022.

Mental

Is he instinctual? Does he play with urgency?

Plays with adequate toughness and is not timid in his play style or scared of contact. Prone to biting on play fakes and eye candy. Does not set the edge well and is slow to process. Often will allow plays to bounce when he could have made a play. Displays and above the line motor from the backside and on the edge.

Athleticism

Does he have the athletic traits you want?

Clark displays adequate explosion and above the line long speed when ranging from sideline to sideline. Plays upright with a high pad level which hinders his body control and his ability to change directions. Can be outmatched on the edge by shifty ball carriers. Has poor overall flexibility and bend in his lower body, and as a result he can struggle to breakdown and make a play. Exhibits adequate play strength when engaging blocker at the point of attack with a strong initial punch.

Technical

Does he have a refined skill set? Is he a projection or is his game developed enough to contribute early?

Constantly communicate with teammates. Displays average ability to navigate around the line of scrimmage cleanly can get tangled up close to the line of scrimmage if he does not make a clean read at the snap. At the point of attack, he struggles to disengage from blockers despite his adequate strength and initial physicality. He gets preoccupied with attempting to find the ball before he has disengaged. Takes above the line pursuit angles and closes the gap between himself and the runner quickly. At the point of contact he flashes outstanding power but is more often an up high, drag down tackler. In coverage he flashes good route recognition and can match up with tight ends well. Shifty backs coming out of the backfield can take advantage of his short area athleticism in space. As a blitzer he plays high and has little leverage to use against opponents. Shows limited hand use and can struggle to disengage if blockers get hands on his chest plate. Relies almost exclusively on speed to win pass rush battles and lacks a backup plan and depth of repertoire to win should that fail him.

Summary

What role does he play? What is his initial projection?
Damone Clark appeared in 50 career games over his four seasons at LSU, including 20 starts. Was primarily a special teams player as a freshman while sitting behind current Tampa Bay LB Devin White. Appeared in all 15 games with 3 starts during the 2019 championship season and was 6th on the team in tackles. Appeared in all 10 games in 2020 and led LSU in tackles with 63 despite only starting 5 games. Had a breakout season in his first full year as a starter in 2021 which culminated in him being named a Butkus Award finalist. Was a second team All-SEC selection while leading LSU and ranking second in the nation in tackles with 135, which ranks as the 4th most in a single season in LSU history. Aligned almost exclusively in the box as an off ball LB. Will miss the entire 2022 season while recovering from spinal fusion surgery to repair a herniated disk in his back. The extent of his recovery will dictate his career path and length. Assuming a full recovery with no further complications, he projects as a rotational 4-3 Will and core special teamer in the NFL. Can develop into an average level stater by improving his short area athleticism, instincts, and flexibility.
