Rams Continue to Rule Big Play Index

The 33rd Team introduced the Big Play Index to show how NFL teams stack up in terms of big plays produced and big plays allowed. Through 10 weeks of the 2020 season, the Los Angeles Rams continue to have the best Big Play differential at plus-18.

As a reminder, we are defining a Big Play as a run of 15-plus yards and/or a pass of 20-plus yards.

For the first time this season, the top 10 teams in the Big Play Index all have winning records. Here are a few interesting notes from this week's numbers:

  • Despite being the only undefeated team in the NFL, the Steelers continue to fair poorly in this metric. Pittsburgh ranks 28th in Big Play differential at minus-11. The only teams worse are the Falcons, Jaguars, Jets and Bengals (combined record: 6-29).
  • The Giants rank 11th with a Big Play differential of plus-3, the highest-ranked team with a losing record. Their numbers are buoyed by a defense that has only allowed five big-play runs all season, tied with the Saints for fewest in that category.
  • Evidence of the Bills' successful passing game: They lead the NFL with 41 passes of 20-plus yards.
  • Whether it's Jameis Winston or Taysom Hill starting at QB for the Saints this week, they'll have a nice matchup: The Falcons have allowed 44 completions of 20-plus yards, most in the NFL this season.

Here's a breakdown of this week's data:
