Giants Place WR Collin Johnson on IR with Torn Achilles

Collin Johnson

On the same day Sterling Shepherd returned to the team, the New York Giants placed Collin Johnson on injured reserve after the wide receiver tore his Achilles tendon at practice on Wednesday, the team reported.

Johnson, who had been practicing with the Giants' first unit with Shepherd and second-year receiver Kadarius Toney out, will miss the entire regular season.

Johnson, 24, has played in the NFL since 2020 after being selected in the fifth round by the Jacksonville Jaguars. He was waived before the 2021 regular season and picked up by the Giants. Injuries to receivers Toney, Darius Slayton, C.J. Board and Shepard gave Johnson an extended look this preseason.

"It’s not so much the size," coach Brian Daboll said about Johnson earlier in the preseason. “It’s his overall intelligence of being able to line up at multiple spots. The ability to separate and get open is important and then make plays on the football when he has an opportunity to."

The 6-foot-6 wide receiver was the tallest at his position in the NFL when he was drafted out of the Texas. In 12 games with the Giants last year, Johnson caught 11 passes for 105 yards. His career totals are 29 catches for 377 yards in 26 career games.

The loss of Johnson was partially mitigated by the return of Shepard, who had injured his Achilles last season. The team also claimed ex-Ravens receiver Jaylon Moore.
