Dave Wannstedt is a former college and NFL Head Coach as well as a studio analyst for Fox Sports.
Wannstedt began his 38-year coaching career at his hometown school, the University of Pittsburgh, spending four seasons as a graduate assistant. Wannstedt would have stints at schools all over the country, with his most notable work at Miami (Florida). He was a part of Hall of Fame Coach Jimmy Johnson’s staff there and made his jump to the NFL when Dallas hired Johnson.
After serving under Johnson for three seasons with the Hurricanes and four with the Cowboys – winning the 1991 NFL title – Wannstedt got a chance to be a head coach in the NFL with the Chicago Bears. From there, he was hired to lead the Miami Dolphins before returning to the University of Pittsburgh as its head coach.
His teams made the NFL playoffs three times and Wannstedt led Pitt to three bowl games. His most memorable win came in a huge upset for Pitt against West Virginia, one of the school’s main rivals. West Virginia was favored by nearly 30 points and was in line for a national title game appearance in 2007. Wannstedt’s Panthers had different plans and won the 100th Backyard Brawl 13-9.
Wannstedt grew up in Pittsburgh, attending Baldwin High School. He was a standout high school player in the area and earned an athletic scholarship to Pitt.
Wannstedt and his wife have two children.
