Anxiety, Opportunity Await Cooper Rush as Cowboys' Fill-in Starter
Analysis 9/14/22
Cooper Rush has a tall task ahead of him as the Cowboys' backup quarterback filling in for Dak Prescott. Just ask former NFL quarterback Matt Cassel, who in 2008 replaced Tom Brady for an entire season in New England when Brady was injured. Cassel compares that 2008 season to Rush's situation 14 years later.
It is a very high-anxiety role for Rush to be in, but it is also the best opportunity the seventh-year pro has had in the NFL. With Dallas formulating a plan around what Rush's strengths are, and Rush knowing he has several weeks to lead the Cowboys until Prescott returns from his injury, Cassel says this is the chance for Rush to set himself up for the rest of his career. There's just a few things he has to do on game days, and he has to stay mentally tough and tune out all the noise.
