2024 NFL Head Coach, General Manager Tracker: Rumors, Updates and Reports

The 2023-2024 NFL regular season is in the books, and just like every year, there are several head coach and general manager vacancies that need to be filled.

Here’s a full rundown of all those vacancies, confirmed candidates, and other notes. This post will be updated as information comes in, so bookmarking it is recommended.


ATLANTA FALCONS

The Falcons fired head coach Arthur Smith after a third straight 7-10 season, while GM Terry Fontenot was retained. Owner Arthur Blank and team CEO Rich McKay will lead the search, along with Fontenot.

carolina Panthers

The Carolina Panthers fired head coach Frank Reich after a 1-10 start and then fired general manager Scott Fitterer after their 2-15 season concluded. This will be the first time under owner David Tepper that Carolina will have both the general manager and head coaching positions vacant simultaneously.

Las Vegas Raiders

The Las Vegas Raiders fired general manager Dave Ziegler and head coach Josh McDaniels after a 3-5 start to the season and replaced them with Champ Kelly and Antonio Pierce. The Raiders finished 5-4 under their leadership and players in the building want Pierce to be the permanent head coach. Regardless, the Raiders will be required by NFL rules to conduct a full search and go through the complete process, which would constitute complying with the Rooney Rule.

Los Angeles Chargers

The Los Angeles Chargers fired general manager Tom Telesco and head coach Brandon Staley after a disappointing 5-9 start to the season. Los Angeles will be an attractive job simply because they have a young franchise quarterback in Justin Herbert. The organization will also be opening a new quarter-of-a-billion-dollar training facility later this year. Chargers president of football operations John Spanos is leading the search.

New England Patriots

The Patriots parted ways with legendary head coach Bill Belichick, who also served as the team's top executive. Belichick won six Super Bowls in New England during his 24 years, but he finished the 2023 season with a 4-13 record.

UPDATE: The Patriots hired inside linebackers coach Jerod Mayo as their head coach on January 12th. New England adjusted Mayo's contract last year to contain a head-coach succession clause that would enable the Patriots to promote him quickly to replace Bill Belichick without conducting interviews to comply with the NFL's Rooney Rule.

The Seahawks and head coach Pete Carroll agreed he won't be back as head coach after 14 seasons, and he will transition to an advisory role with the organization.

TENNESSEE TITANS

The Tennessee Titans fired head coach Mike Vrabel after six seasons, following consecutive frustrating campaigns that saw the team finish multiple games under .500 both times. Owner Amy Adams Strunk will lead the search, along with general manager Ron Carthon.

Washington Commanders

The Commanders fired head coach Ron Rivera after four seasons, while also removing the GM title from Martin Mayhew. Washington has new ownership with a group led by Josh Harris, and this will be their first head coaching search. Former Golden State Warriors general manager Bob Myers and former Minnesota Vikings general manager Rick Spielman will help in the search. Harris would prefer to hire a head of football operations first.
