The 33rd Team’s Key NFL Combine Takeaways: Day 4

The 33rd Team is reporting on the NFL Combine live from Indianapolis all week. Here’s our final recap of the biggest takeaways from Day 4 of the event. Find our takeaways from Day 1, 2 and 3 linked below.

Key Takeaways from Day 4

  • Baylor CB Kalon Barnes ran a 4.23 official 40-yard dash, the fastest time ever by a defensive player. The former track runner at Baylor ran a 10.29 100 Meter at the 2019 Baylor Invitational. His personal best was 10.04 with titles in both the 100 Meters and 200 Meters in HS in Texas. His time was the second-fastest of any 40-yard dash in Scouting Combine history
  • UTSA CB Tariq Woolen may be the biggest riser of the offseason after an impressive Senior Bowl and even better Combine showing. The former WR stands at 6-foot-4, ran a 4.26 40-yard dash and managed a 42-inch vertical leap. He’s technically very raw, but his physical tools are unmatched among cornerbacks to recently enter the league
  • Maryland DS Nick Cross had an excellent showing. He was the fastest safety in attendance (4.34) and was top four at the position in both the broad jump and vertical jump
  • Sam Houston State CB Zyon McCollum will make scouts turn the tape back on with his eye-popping testing numbers. The 6-foot-2 FCS standout ran a 4.33 40-yard dash, led the CB group with an 11-foot broad jump, notched a gaudy 6.48 3-cone time and tested second among CBs with a 39.5-inch vertical
  • The XPE Sports training company helped produce some of the best 40 times this year. Standouts like Nick Cross, Chigoziem Okonkwo, Tyquan Thornton, Isaiah Pacheco, Kalon Barnes, Tariq Woolen, Kaair Elam, and Tycen Anderson trained with XPE in Fort Lauderdale, FL
  • Notre Dame DS and potential top 10 pick Kyle Hamilton ran a 4.59 40-yard dash, which was lower than many expected. However, he did show off his lower half explosiveness with top 3 showings in the vertical and broad jump for his position
  • Baylor DS JT Woods continues to rise with his pre-draft performance. The late addition to the Senior Bowl had a good showing in practice and ran a 4.36 40-yard dash on Sunday. Woods also led the safety group with a 39.5-inch vertical and notched a top four result for his position on the broad jump
  • Penn State DS Jaquan Brisker got hurt during the bench press and stopped participating at the Combine early. He will finish his testing at his pro day
  • The 2022 Combine had the fastest showing of Punters ever. The group was led in that regard by Georgia’s Jake Camarda, who ran a 4.56 40-yard dash, faster than four of the defensive backs who ran the 40 on Sunday. Camarda and San Diego State’s Matt Araiza are the top candidates to be drafted this year at the position
