We caught up with Joey at the NFL Combine for this week’s Friday Five…
Who is your biggest mentor?
My dad. He’s Joe III. I’m Joe IV. Pretty much everything in my life and who i am and what I care about comes from him. Always an ear to lean on for venting and advice.
How did you get into the business of making people laugh through impressions?
I’ve always done impressions and sketches. They just used to be on a much smaller scale like in my friend’s basement or my grandparents living room. Then when I was trying to break through in the media world after college I decided to tap into the comedic bone I’ve always really wanted to pursue and so far it’s worked out OK!
What is your greatest goal in your sports comedy career?
I wouldn’t really call it “sports comedy.” I want to do so much more than that. Again, it’s just a feather in my cap, a tool or trait to bring to the table that sets me apart from others. But I don’t want to be doing this forever. I want to be in movies and on TV.
What are the keys to making sure your impressions are as spot-on as possible?
Very similar to what football coaches and players do when it comes to preparation and film study. If it’s someone new or a little more difficult to get down then I’ll set up the camera, hit record, and work through some things then play it back to see what I can improve.
