Scouting Overview

Memphis Tigers quarterback Seth Henigan is a productive four-year starter who projects as a developmental quarterback in the NFL.

Henigan has some nice flashes of arm ability and has illustrated the ability to attack plays down the field. He lacks quick-twitch ability or a dynamic arm but appears to have sufficient threshold traits at the position. He could be worth a flier as a stash option to carry within a system for a few seasons.

Positives

  • Has a good grasp of his college offense as a 4-year starter
  • Does possess the ability to push the ball down the field and look for explosive plays
  • Works the pocket effectively to operate within the confines of the play

Negatives

  • Is not a dynamic athlete at the position, which caps his ability to win outside structure
  • Is not a highly refined player within structure, either
  • Lacks appeal outside the pocket in most opportunities

Background

Henigan is from Denton, TX, and played high school football for Ryan HS. There, he was a 3-star recruit (247 Sports) while playing for his father, Dave, the head coach at Ryan HS. The program went 44-2 under Henigan’s command, and he enrolled at Memphis as a member of their 2021 recruiting class.

Henigan became the first true freshman quarterback to start the season-opener in Memphis history in 2021, and he started all 11 games in which he appeared in that season. He would go on to post the highest passing yardage of any true freshman in FBS that season. Henigan would go on to start the next 38 games for Memphis from 2022-2024 and was named Second Team All-AAC in 2023 for his play as a junior.

Henigan accepted an invitation to the 2025 Reese’s Senior Bowl to culminate his high school career.

Tale Of The Tape

It doesn’t take long to notice Henigan’s background as a coach’s son. He showcases a desirable level of understanding of offensive execution and applies that to how he plays the game.

He might have maxed out his physical abilities, which leaves him on the fringes of the NFL. But at the least, this is a heady player between the ears who has enough arm ability to hit some big-league throws and is worth getting into your facility to see if you can draw something greater out of him.

Henigan is not a quick-twitch athlete and lacks the big-time, explosive arm that you’d typically want to see from a more “from the pocket” passer in today’s game. However, he does have field vision and an eye for taking shot plays down the field, and he processes safety rotation to anticipate his shots and big heaves.

The instincts are sufficient, and, as a progression passer, Henigan does show the ability to feel the development of the pocket and slide within the confines of his protection to stay upright and give himself a chance to dish out the football.

When things go sideways or when Henigan is forced to improvise, you usually see the lack of appeal and the limitations that put a glass ceiling over his game. Henigan struggles to extend plays with his legs and does not have the frame to shrug off sacks — if you get a hand on him, he’s usually going to go down. As a result, Henigan can get rattled and expedite his process within the pocket. These issues can compound on him and further implicate his accuracy and placement.

These aren’t pinpoint areas of Henigan’s game to begin with, which leave him compromised in fulfilling the rigors of the execution he looks to oversee.

Ideal Scheme Fit, Role

Henigan projects as a potential practice squad stash and who could develop as a long-term play for a potential backup quarterback. He’s not likely to warrant 53-man roster commitments as a rookie.
