Updated Big Play Index: Packers on the Rise

The 33rd Team introduced the Big Play Index to show how NFL teams stack up in terms of big plays produced and big plays allowed. Through 12 weeks of the 2020 season, the Los Angeles Rams continue to top the Big Play Index with a differential of plus-18. That's a drop from the previous week, however, and the Green Bay Packers have significantly narrowed what had been a big lead.

As a reminder, we are defining a Big Play as a run of 15-plus yards and/or a pass of 20-plus yards.

Same as last week, nine of the top 10 teams in the Big Play Index have winning records -- though the Denver Broncos (4-7) dropped from fourth to ninth after struggling last week with practice squad WR Kendall Hinton at QB. Here are a few interesting notes from this week's numbers:

  • The top five teams in Big Play differential have a combined record of 41-14.
  • The bottom three teams have a combined record of 3-29-1
  • The undefeated Pittsburgh Steelers are still at 22nd with a Big Play differential of minus-4, but they are not the only team with a winning record in the red. The Seattle Seahawks have a differential of minus-2. The Miami Dolphins are near the bottom at minus-15.

Here's a breakdown of this week's data:
