WR Denzel Mims Requests Trade From N.Y. Jets

Wide receiver Denzel Mims, via his agent, requested a trade from the New York Jets on Thursday, hoping a move can afford him a greater opportunity to jumpstart his career.

Ron Slavin, Mims' agent, said in a statement that the third-year receiver "does not have a future with the Jets," citing the lack of opportunities for Mims to work with the starting offense this preseason. He further states that "at this point, a trade is our only option, since the Jets have told us repeatedly they will not release him."

The Jets selected Mims out of Baylor with the 59th overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. At the time, many expected Mims to grow into a key skill position player for New York, given his athleticism. He has appeared in just 20 games in his first two seasons, registering 31 receptions for 490 yards. He is still seeking his first NFL touchdown.

After posting 23 receptions in nine games as a rookie, Mims had only eight catches in 11 games last season. The Jets elected to make him a healthy scratch at times during the season, and his snap counts when he was active were cut in half.

Mims saw his spot on the team's depth chart lowered throughout his first two years with the team as New York continued to invest heavily in its receiver room. The Jets drafted Ohio State's Garrett Wilson 10th overall in this year's draft, and re-signed Braxton Berrios to a two-year deal. That followed the team's drafting of Elijah Moore in the second round of the 2021 draft, and the signing of Corey Davis as a free agent that same offseason.
