Build

Does he have prototype size? What is body type? What is growth potential?

Adequate height and weight. Limited arm length and adequate hand size. Average-sized arms with solid toning. Good solid build, thick across chest and torso. Athletic legs and lower body with adequate muscular thickness. Pectoral Injury in March 2022 prevented him from working out at Combine or Pro Day.

Mental

Is he instinctual? Does he play with urgency?

Average instincts, reads the game well and generally makes the correct decisions but it’s more the immediacy that holds him back, not quite sluggish in his reactions but isn’t immediate in his reactions/implementation either and as such runs into a lot of closing holes. Adequate motor/effort, shows the will and fight to try and overcome tackles/ contact. Adequate toughness, is a determined player, will put his head/shoulder into contact and try and generate additional yards.

Athleticism

Does he have the athletic traits you want?

Average overall athletic ability, with limited explosiveness and speed, isn’t going to scare defenders with pure foot speed alone. Limited twitch/ suddenness and COD, fairly cumbersome on his feet doesn’t possess high-end twitch to make defenders miss. Average body control and adequate bend/flexibility, stays fairly balanced through his cuts allowing him to keep his feet and turn upfield. Average play strength, has the mental will to fight in the tackles but lacks a click or two of raw strength to break tackles or win extra yards through contact.

Technical

Does he have a refined skill set? Is he a projection or is his game developed enough to contribute early?

Average ball security, 2 fumbles in limited carries across his D1 college career. Adequate path discipline and limited outside run ability, shows adequate initial patience to allow his blocks to set-up, however, average instincts and limited explosiveness/speed inhibit his ability to get to and turn around the edge, will prefer to cutback inside after pressing to the outside as that’s his best option for gaining territory given AA limitations. Average inside run performance, does his best work in tight situations between the tackles, compacts his body through the hole making him able to squeeze through gaps that appear unlikely for his ample frame, and applies adequate toughness, motor/effort and average play strength to hold ground/gain 1 to 2 additional yards through the tackle. Limited MYM ability, isn’t very nimble/agile on his feet, shouldn’t pose sure-footed defenders with a good wrap many problems. Average finisher in the open field, uses adequate toughness to finish runs with a hit, through contact is his most effective way of generating additional yards. Limited receiving ability, lacks an effective route tree at present and limited COD/ explosiveness will likely prevent large jumps of development in this area. Limited hands, while functional there’s a few double-catches on tape which look susceptible to defensive knockouts/rip outs. Above the line Pass Pro, above the line processing/pickup, plays with outstanding leverage for an RB blocker and fits very well with above the line UOH power and placement.

Summary

What role does he play? What is his initial projection?
Vavae Malepeai is a sixth-year graduate from USC who has featured in 50 career games. Four-star RB prospect out of Hawaii, No. 225 nationally in 2016 according to 247 sports. Medically redshirted in 2016 following a broken left shoulder blade in fall camp. Played on special teams and as a reserve tailback in 2017. Saw a doubling of carries to 90+ in 2018 and 2019, contributing 500+ yards and 6TDs+ in each campaign. Continued to be a rotational tailback throughout the remaining years of his career, never surpassing an 11 carry per game average. In the NFL, Vavae Malepeai will likely continue in a similar reserve/ special team role that he played in college. He lacks the high-end athleticism and instincts to be a workhorse reliable no.1 back in the NFL but with adequate toughness and motor, mixed in with Above the Line Pass Pro he’ll have a good chance to earn some regular season snaps.
