Build

Does he have prototype size? What is body type? What is growth potential?

Above the line size as James is listed at 6022 and weighs in at 214. Probably doesn't need to add on a lot to his frame. Frame and durability and above the line with James not missing many games during his collegiate career and looking filled out for the most part. Length is average with James having 31 5/8-inch arms.

Mental

Is he instinctual? Does he play with urgency?

Toughness is average. Has a difficult time fighting through contact to work his way back to passes. Instincts are adequate with flashes of above the line. Has the ability to find the soft spots of zone coverage and create bigger plays (AT Miami/Q2/14:10). Effort and motor are average with flashes of adequate. He is willing to throw blocks for teammates but needs to have more urgency on his routes (AT Wagner/Q2/0:34).

Athleticism

Does he have the athletic traits you want?

Explosiveness is above the line. Has the ability to create something out of nothing. Speed is adequate. Body control, flexibility, and bend are all limited. James has a very difficult time contorting his body to make difficult catches whether they be contested or on lower passes (AT Wagner/Q4/4:47). Change of direction is adequate as James shows an ability to reverse field in order to pick up more yards even if it's not to his advantage(AT Miami/Q3/8:42). Play strength is adequate with James being able to slip out of tackles with adequate lower body strength.

Technical

Does he have a refined skill set? Is he a projection or is his game developed enough to contribute early?

Return ability is average as James shows patience and adequate ball-carrier vision on returns. Isn't a huge part of his game as James only returned kicks during his freshman year. Perimeter blocking is adequate with James being able to hold his own against corners. Suddenness is average while release is limited. James has a difficult time creating separation off the line unless he is running intermediate routes. Ball skills are limited with James showing inconsistent hands and having a hard time reeling in passes (AT Wagner/Q3/0:43). Route running is average with flashes of adequate. James looked at his best in this area when running routes over the middle of the field. Run after catch ability is adequate with flashes of above the line. Can make something out of nothing while also having the ability to make defenders miss in the open field. Vertical threat ability is poor with flashes of limited. Has a very difficult time creating separation from defenders using his long speed and routes look choppy when running deeper routes.

Summary

What role does he play? What is his initial projection?
Tyshaun James came into Central Connecticut State University as a QB before transitioning to wide receiver. In his freshman season, James reeled in only 1 REC for 11 YDS, but contributed on the kick return team where he had 2 returns for 39 YDS. In his sophomore season, James saw an increased amount of playing time and production where he caught 20 passes for 218 YDS and 4 TDS. Then, in his junior season, James broke out for CCSU as he had career-highs in REC (48), YDS (978), YPC (20.4), receiving TDS (9), rushing yards (167), and rushing TDS (5) on top of being named a First Team All-NEC receiver. CCSU did not play a game in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In his final season at CCSU, James had 45 REC for 649 YDS and 5 TDS in another solid campaign. James is a developmental WR with practice squad potential who wins with his explosiveness, ball-carrier vision, and run after the catch ability. He needs to improve his deep route running ability, play with more urgency, and do a better job of using his physical traits to make tough contested catches or catches on low passes in order to make it onto a practice squad at the NFL level.
