Mental

Is he instinctual? Does he play with urgency?

Above the line instincts, quick to read fronts and defenders in the open field, adjusts and capitalises on this understanding to gain additional yards. Outstanding motor/effort, clearly loves the fight, legs drive hard against contact and even vs. gang tackles will continue to fight to hold/gain ground. Outstanding toughness, will physically take on defenders to gain extra yards wherever possible.

Athleticism

Does he have the athletic traits you want?

Above the line overall athletic ability, with above the line explosiveness and adequate speed. Above the line COD, able to rapidly adjust laterally while stopped/ flat footed or on the move at full speed. Above the line body control and adequate bend/flexibility, is very confident/ sure on his feet, bends his body and puts it in the best position possible to gain additional ground. Above the line play strength, wins most physical contests as a runner, will need a DL or group tackle to bring him down.

Technical

Does he have a refined skill set? Is he a projection or is his game developed enough to contribute early?

Adequate ball security, 3 fumbles in 2021, 4 across his college career. Adequate path discipline, is patient as he takes the snap, doesn’t bend off his inside/outside run path and lets blocks set-up in front of him. Outstanding inside run performance, even with his large frame stays very compact through interior gaps, uses outstanding toughness, effort and above the line play strength to win his fair share of battles with DLs/LBs to gain yards through the tackle. Adequate outside run ability, has above the line explosiveness and adequate speed to beat slower defenders to the sideline or to cut back upfield to earn chunk gains. Adequate finisher in the open field and MYM ability, equally effective at creating additional yards through foot speed, agility and power, will be a threat once at the second/third levels of the defense. Limited receiving ability, not a natural hands catcher, limited ability to pluck from around his frame, also not a refined route runner at this stage. Poor Pass Pro, average pick-up, but lacks real technique, currently plays with poor leverage and UOH and so will do little meaningfully to halt a blitzer.

Summary

What role does he play? What is his initial projection?
Tyrion Davis-Price is a Junior from LSU who has featured in 35 career games. Four-star RB prospect, No. 139 nationally in 2019, according to 247 Sports. Significant rotational piece as a freshman on LSU’s 2019 juggernaut offense, contributing 6 TDs and 297 yards. Was again a rotational piece in 2020, with 453 yards and 3 TDs, before breaking out in 2021 as LSU’s lead back. In a down year for LSU, Davis-Price was a consistent performer in 2021 contributing 6 TDs and 1,016 yards that included a dominating 287 yard, 3 TD performance vs. Florida. Tyrion Davis-Price has the physical and mental traits you look for in a lead-back for a shotgun/spread base offense. His receiving ability and Pass Pro will need to improve for him to be a consistent three-down back, but he should immediately be able to come in and be a workhorse back for an NFL team on first and second down.
