Build

Does he have prototype size? What is body type? What is growth potential?

Allgeier is a LB transformed into a RB. He started off his college career playing on ST and at LB as a freshman, before transitioning to RB during the COVID season. He is a well-built RB with strong shoulders but could use some refining in his legs. Minor injuries in his career with groin pull that had him miss some practice.

Mental

Is he instinctual? Does he play with urgency?

Outstanding competitive toughness with the will to fight for extra yards. Willing pass blocker but shows his newness to the position with poor technique despite the size/strength to initiate contact and hold a block. Patient behind the LOS to find a gap in outside rushes but best gap recognition comes at the second level as he is able to find open grass and bounce to it. Can be seen bouncing to the outside too often/quickly and missing gaps when approaching the LOS too quickly on inside runs.

Athleticism

Does he have the athletic traits you want?

Shows above the line explosion out of his cuts when he properly sinks but can be seen running high into contact on inside rushes and limiting explosion on outside rushes as he doesn't always sink before pushing off his plant foot. Average long speed that will cut of pursuit angles with intelligence, not long speed. Best trait is body control and forcing missed tackles at a high percentage. Less MYM ability, more broken tackle rate. Strong shoulders and upper body to shove off hits and active feet to get out of ankle tackles. Strength can be improved in his lowers with a consistently lower pad level into contact.

Technical

Does he have a refined skill set? Is he a projection or is his game developed enough to contribute early?

Tyler Allgeier has soft/natural hands with the ability to adjust to the ball in the air and make meaningful progress with the ball in his hands. MYM ability shown mostly in receiving game in space at the second level. Adequate footwork for his size but can be heavy footed in traffic. Impressive ability to sift through trash at the second level and continue up field with similar speed. If speed is interfered with, it can take time to regain, not the quickest. Needs to work on his ball placement and make sure it is tighter into his body at contact point. Fumbling more prevalent in 2021 film.

Summary

What role does he play? What is his initial projection?
Tyler Allgeier is a 2nd year starting RB out of BYU who started his career as a backup LB and special teams player in college. He transitioned to RB fully going into the COVID season. Has been used in a variety of packages at times as the goal-line back with inside handoffs but plays his best football on outside rushes. Remains patience to find gaps and can sift through bodies at the second level with outstanding contact balance and toughness. Has 3rd down upside despite being very raw in pass protection (is willing) but is a soft/natural pass catcher. With improvement to his strength in his lowers, gap recognition and plant drive/sinking in his cuts, Allgeier could push for RB1 snaps in relief of a starter. He should contribute early and serve value as a premiere ST option with upside at the position as he is semi-new to it.
