Technical

Does he have a refined skill set? Is he a projection or is his game developed enough to contribute early?

Above the line ball security, careful to protect the ball running through the LOS or into contact, only 1 fumble across his college career. Outstanding path discipline, patient and allows his blockers to set runs up, plays with above the line decision making to pursue to the edge or cutback inside. Adequate Outside Run Ability, will be most effective on OZ but average speed will limit his ability to maximize returns. Average inside run performance, limited size and loses some processing in-between the tackles and COD, but has adequate burst and above the line decision making to find and accelerate through gaps to the second level. Adequate ability to create on his own and MYM, uses variety of agility moves to evade tacklers including spin and juke. Average finisher in the open field, isn’t very powerful so once in contact won’t break free and gain yards. Average receiving ability, has the COD to win on more routes like out, curl, with average hands. Outstanding Pass Pro, outstanding mirror, UOH placement and punching power, can execute blocks on all back seven players.

Summary

What role does he play? What is his initial projection?
T.J. Pledger is a Senior transfer from Utah who has featured in 43 career games. Four-star RB, No. 100 nationally in 2018 according to 247 sports. Began his career at Oklahoma in 2018, starting only 5 games across his 3 years in Norman. 2020 was his most productive year as a Sooner, generating 455 yards but averaged only 10 carries per game over that season. Transferred to Utah for 2021, where he again split touches, recording 699 yards off 105 carries. T.J. Pledger projects as an adequate third-down running back in a wide-zone/outside-zone scheme where he can best ultilize his above the line decision making and adequate outside run ability. Will also be an outstanding asset in Pass Pro and an average player in the receiving game too with scope to develop.
