Technical

Does he have a refined skill set? Is he a projection or is his game developed enough to contribute early?

Gains ground very quickly in drop with big hitch step. Adequate placement and flashes the ability to hit throws in incredibly tight windows across the field, dropping passes on the sideline or darting between the numbers. Elite velocity on underneath to intermediate passes, beating defenders with zip alone. Above the line arm strength, can hit sideline-to-sideline and makes deep throws from set feet. Can break outside the pocket and keeps eyes downfield. Four-year team captain …. Sloppy, inconsistent drop. Loose with the ball in the pocket, with poor feel for pressure. Poor decision making, doesn't show the ability to read a defense and locks in on first read. Misses open reads and will take unnecessary deep shots. Doesn't display anticipation, hesitating and chopping feet until read is fully open. Limited mechanics, motion is fully out-of-sync with limited torque due to mispointed plant foot, little-to-no weight transfer that causes passes to sail high, and an extended throwing motion that can skew shoulders, especially on deep shots. Average accuracy overall, routinely missing passes entirely when mechanics get especially loose. Limited touch, struggling to consistently lead receivers. Poor decisions outside the pocket, with out-of-control mechanics and balance that significantly impact accuracy.

Summary

What role does he play? What is his initial projection?
Sixth-year who has started 40 of 45 career games with a career record of 28-17, including 10 starts in 2021 at 7-3. Three-star HS prospect who redshirted as a freshman while winning team's Red Raider Award for scout team contributions. Took over as starter for final four games in 2017, beating #10 school and leading largest road 4QC in school history. Became a regular starter in 2018, named Honorable Mention All-Big 12 in 2019. Under HC Chris Klieman (third season), OC Courtney Messingham (third season), and QBs Coach Collin Klein (fifth season), Thompson leads a shotgun-heavy run-based offense. Developmental QB you can win with from the pocket with half-field or preset reads. Big-armed QB and longtime team captain who flashes high-level throws using velocity and has foot speed and play strength to be sufficient as a runner. Doesn't progress through reads well and makes poor decisions. Very inconsistent mechanics that sap arm strength and accuracy. Panicky against pressure.
