Build

Does he have prototype size? What is body type? What is growth potential?

Otito Ogbonnia is a fleshy, round mound of a 3-4, 0-2i NT with outstanding overall size, having above the line height, and above the line weight that is mostly housed in his belly and ginormous, round hips and thighs. Possesses high shoulders, limited neck, and long, dangly arms, having outstanding overall length with outstanding arm length and outstanding hand size. Ogbonnia has outstanding frame/durability and could end up being a high developmental upside, ball-of-clay type considering his age (youngest among DTs and will have just turned 22 when the 2022 NFL season begins) and build (would rather build upon a stronger lower than upper half for a developmental prospect). Did not miss a game due to injury in his career while at UCLA. Book smart (still developing FBIQ) and plans to go to Law School after his FB career. Was placed on the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll 7 times while at UCLA while earning his undergraduate degree in Geography/Environmental Studies (was enrolled in the Transformative Coaching and Leadership graduate program in the School of Education right before he left for the NFL). Intrigued by his Shot Put/Discus background as well from being on the Track team at UCLA for his 1st 2 years as well.

Mental

Is he instinctual? Does he play with urgency?

Otito Ogbonnia has limited toughness, flashing physicality and ability to create knock back at the POA from a 0-3-Tech. However, at the same time, he rarely works with intent/violence v R/P which will get him blown off the ball at times (got tossed in multiple reps at the Senior Bowl especially from a 3-Tech). Gets weaker as the game goes on. Average instincts/FBIQ with flashes of snap anticipation (showing ability to be the 1st DL off the ball) and flashes of instincts/awareness v R/P (they’ll utilize him as a Spy player as well and shows ability to recognize screens and trace the ball on the outside). Better reading and reacting when he can initiate in the Run game and 2-Gap. Limited, under-developed block recognition. Inconsistent effort/motor and can be seen chasing in multiple instances to the sideline (effective cutback player) and finding work in the 2nd half of the snap v Pass. Not always urgent with his movements and would like to see finish plays more. Asked, “Does he love football?”, multiple times while watching him.

Athleticism

Does he have the athletic traits you want?

Otito Ogbonnia has average explosiveness, with flashes of getting off the ball early and often (while showing other times where it’s the complete opposite). Flashes initial strike/punch and ability to 2-Gap (can’t extend on blocks consistently but length gives him a chance). Flashes lateral explosion (can explode out laterally as a B-Gap rusher from a 0-Tech). Flashes ability to 1-arm and maintain. Inconsistent overall explosiveness. Limited speed (but has surprising AA to get out in space and chase) running like a bowling ball to the sideline as a cutback tackling option (didn’t show up in his 40). Hard-to-evaluate, wild balance and body control, losing both vertical and horizontal leverage frequently. Finds a way somehow to maintain his balance at times like a cat, while completely losing his body underneath him in other instances. Specifically, his 3rd step can be out of control/overextended and will aid in loss of leverage, allowing for his chest to raise. Doesn’t like secondary blockers coming into his sides. Average flexibility/bend, flashing ability to twist and cycle his body while turning corners with his ankles but has hip stiffs that limit his overall rush ability. Can execute a spin move effectively when he has lost initially to work back. Adequate COD predicated upon his ability to sink and gather his body, exploding out of his cuts at times. Limited play strength and lacks violence. Can be taken advantage of on goal line due to lack of power. Flashes knockback and ability to hold to point in 1v1s especially at a 0-Tech v OCs. Plays too high and “huggy” too frequently and can become a leaner at times.

Technical

Does he have a refined skill set? Is he a projection or is his game developed enough to contribute early?

Otito Ogbonnia has inconsistent, average get off/initial burst that flashes at times with anticipation, while looking sluggish in other instances. Possesses limited pass rush ability due to flashes as a twisting 0-Tech with average flexibility in his ankles to bend but lacks hip fluidity. Flashes a secondary spin move. Limited heavy handedness and isn’t a consistent initiator with his hands. That along with his struggles with hand placement (gets “huggy” and goes wide with his hands on OL) makes him lose early especially when doubled. Flashes strike and 2-Gap ability but needs significantly more consistency. Rarely see him extend on blocks. Limited POA player that needs to win early to be able to take advantage and read and react effectively. Limited disengage, utilizing mostly a swipe and swim move to try to get off blocks with neither having great effect just yet. Limited closing speed, as he is willing to run out on the perimeter but rarely finishes on plays. Even so, he is a serviceable cutback player. Limited twitch/suddenness and lacks sudden/reactionary movements consistently. Limited play temperament and needs to improve significantly in this area to continue to develop.

Summary

What role does he play? What is his initial projection?
SR who has started 27 of 43 career games, including 12 of 12 in 2021. 3-star HS prospect from Texas (both his parents are Nigerian). Ogbonnia never truly had a fulltime starting role until 2021. Started 6 games (played in all 12 games) as a FR in 2018. Started 5 games (played in all 12 games) as a SO in 2019. Started 4 games (played in all 7 games) as a JR during a COVID-shortened season in 2020. Started 12 games (played in all 12 games) as a SR, gaining 2nd-Team All-Pac-12 recognition by PFF. Senior Bowl attendee. His 1st 2 years (2018-2019) while at UCLA, he competed in the Shot Put and Discus on the Track & Field team, seeing significant success. Ogbonnia is one of the youngest listed DTs in the draft (8/25/2000, will have just turned 22 when the 2022 NFL season begins). Played under HC Chip Kelly (4th season) and DC Jerry Azzinaro (4th season). Otito Ogbonnia is a high ceiling, low floor (extremely raw) Developmental Backup with traits who could potentially develop into a Rotational Starter you can win with down the line. He projects best as a 0-2i NT in a 3-4 who could excel in spurts v Run (especially 2-Gapping and shouldn't be considered as a 1-Gap penetrator) while also flashing some pass rush at times with ankle flexibility. Ultimately, inconsistent v R/P right now. Needs to heavily reconstruct his UOH and develop his FBIQ/block recognition to find success. Highly developmental player who struggles with coordination/body control but has the AA, frame/size, and youth to perceive that there could make significant strides at the next level under the right direction. Need to question if he truly loves Football.
