Mental

Is he instinctual? Does he play with urgency?

Above the line instincts, has a sound understanding of his defensive scheme and route concepts, processes the situation well and puts himself in good positions/passing lanes to interrupt plays. Above the line motor/effort, drives hard to the football and doesn’t give up on plays, hustled to the sideline on numerous occasions, including on a couple that stopped sure-fire TDs. Above the line toughness, welcomes contact with blockers and ballcarriers alike and seeks to land his own clean blows when the situation arises.

Athleticism

Does he have the athletic traits you want?

Adequate overall athletic ability with adequate explosiveness and speed, has the range to cover from single-high C1/C3 and certainly from split-safety alignments. Adequate COD, hip fluidity, bend and flexibility, easily moves around the shallow and deep zones, can adjust his drop, flip his hips and transition to pick-up receivers in his zone. Adequate play strength, has the technique and power to capably take down ballcarriers in the openfield and the physicality to halt receivers from gaining extra yards in and after the catch.

Technical

Does he have a refined skill set? Is he a projection or is his game developed enough to contribute early?

Adequate backpedal, gains depth straight-back or at an angle equally well, might struggle if asked to flip hips twice in Man Coverage from Soft/Squat technique as his balance appeared compromised in those situations. Adequate deep zone coverage, spaces and flows well in the defensive scheme. Average man coverage defender, can survive in Off-Man coverage with adequate COD and speed but lacks the high-end athleticism and length to contend consistently with big wideouts or short, sudden slot receivers. Adequate ball skills, attempts to get his hands on the ball in contested catch situations, not always successful with the punchout so may need to work on punching but has the instincts to find the ball. Average plant to drive, doesn’t drive off his backleg from straight or angled backpedals to fire him into the flats or for outside run support. Adequate burst to close. Adequate overall support vs. Run, takes adequate angles to the ball, plays with average leverage and adequate play strength to take on blockers. Adequate open field tackling technique, has an effective low shoot and adequate wrap, can also make strong base tackles when required.

Summary

What role does he play? What is his initial projection?
Nolan Turner is a sixth-year graduate at Clemson who has featured in 65 career games. Father, Kevin, played for Dabo Swinney at Alabama before 8 years in the NFL with New England and Philadelphia. Unranked S prospect according to 247 Sports, who picked Clemson over UAB. Redshirted in 2016 and played mostly special teams in 2017. Became a substantial contributor on 2018’s title-winning team’s defense with 15 tackles, and stepped up again in 2019 with two interceptions and 21 tackles. In 2020, he became permanent team captain and was named second-team All-American and PFF All-ACC after snagging 4 INTs and making 27 tackles. Played another solid year in 2021, as the Clemson defense took a significant step back from their previous dominance. Perennially underrated, Nolan Turner, will likely have staying power in the NFL. While he lacks high-end athleticism, his above the line instincts and toughness and all-around adequate athletic and technical ability mean he should be able to survive in an NFL secondary. Preferably would line up as a split-field or C2 free safety but could also operate in single-high C1/C3 scheme if needed.
