Athleticism

Does he have the athletic traits you want?

Outstanding explosiveness, especially triggering down hill in the run game and ability to close in on wide receivers in the pass game to deliver big hits. Above the line speed, pursuit angles in chasing the ball carrier, closing in, and covering ground. Ability to get over the top in deep single high coverage, which helps him in his cover ability. Average body control. Has a wide base when tackling, which cause his feet to freeze and sets himself up by leaving his feet before contact. Low percentage tackling rate. Needs to develop continuing to move his feet and breaking down fully. Average flexibility/bend, ability to bend in his knees and hips while tackling and in his back pedal, but can provide more to be more successful. COD is average. Changing in lateral movements gives him trouble. Hops while moving laterally and acts as if his feet are delayed in the process. Adequate in play strength. Plays physical at the LOS, generates stopping power in the run game.

Technical

Does he have a refined skill set? Is he a projection or is his game developed enough to contribute early?

Back pedal is average. Unusually pre snap stance, stays in back pedal too long, and still needs improvement on sinking his hips. Twitch/suddenness is adequate, takes him awhile to process the play, then reads and reacts with agility efficiently. Average in hip fluidity. Hip mobility is tight, which stops his lateral movements and doesn't allow him to open up his hips freely. Run support is adequate. Ball will be handed off and he will still be backpedaling. Creates productive angles to the ball carrier, tunneling in and out. Has ability to save big plays with his open field tackling. Burst to close is adequate. Ability to explode down hill to support in the run, need to have more of a break down before contact. Struggles leaving his feet when tackling. Above the line plant and drive. Makes contact with force and drives his feet with his explosiveness. Tendencies to get dragged by his opponents from ankle tackles due to leaving his feet when tackling. Adequate cover ability in zone and man. Shows adequate skills in bracketing the slot receiver in zone. Demonstrates covering short and intermediate routes, with covering TEs/RBs out of the backfield. Needs work with deep coverage down field. Will get to locked in on backfield and will be late to get over the top. Ball skills are average. Reads QBs eyes well and will react when ball is in the air, but keys on QBs eyes too long getting him in trouble and out of position. Struggles to time when the ball is in the air.

Summary

What role does he play? What is his initial projection?
Cross JR DB, at Maryland, started 21 games out of 30 games in his career. Rated as a four-star recruit coming out of high school. Cross was coached by current Maryland running backs coach Elijah Brooks in high school. In 2021, earned Honorable Mention All-Big Ten team. Achieved this under Michael Locksley (Head Coach) and Brian Stewart (Defensive Coordinator). Was Honorable Mention All-Big Ten team in 2019 and 2020. Cross projects as a backup strong safety or box safety in the NFL with special teams upside due to his outstanding explosiveness, plant and drive, and speed. Has the ability to explode downhill to support in the run, but needs to have more of a breakdown before contact. Struggles to leave his feet when tackling. Above-the-line plant and drive. Makes contact with force and drives his feet with his explosiveness. Above the line speed, pursuit angles in chasing the ball carrier, closing in, and covering ground. Ability to get over the top in deep single-high coverage, which helps make him successful at safety. Needs to develop his instincts, ball skills, and run support in order to become an average starter at the next level. Mid to late 3rd round talent.
